Clayton is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 24,421 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Softgun cases were first made in Clayton in 1892. The company that manufacturers softguns today, H&R Block, originated from Clayton and manufactured their firearms there until it moved to Union City, California in 1994. In 1895, Wm. Jennings & Sons began making shotguns and pistols in Clayton and continues to do so today as well as produce revolvers for both personal use and commercially-sold handguns - though not all handguns are produced there anymore (H&R Block also manufactures Remington rifles). In 1911, George Aiken opened a gunsmithing business in downtown Clayton which became known as "Aiken's Gun Shop." From here on out most firearm manufacturing took place within the framework of two other businesses - Wm.'s Pistol Supply and Aiken's Rifle Emporium - each of which had its own employees and ownership interests therein. This continued until World War II when production shifted wholly to federally licensed dealers nationwide due to wartime restrictions on steel production; however some guns still continue to be manufactured at Old Aiken's now that it functions as a museum open daily 9am-5pm (closed Mondays). The Museum has an extensive collection of antique firearms dating back to 1793 including one of the world’s earliest Colt pistols!

The area that now comprises Clayton was platted as part of Wake County on November 3, 1821 by commissioners James Auld and Wm. Pemberton. On January 1, 1832, it became one of two counties (the other being Johnston County) within Charlotte County when it split from Wake County. Clayton's history started with Captain George Armstrong who settled there in 1792 and built his home on present day Old Fort Armstrong Road. He had three sons: Captain William Armstrong (1793-1855), Major David Armstrong (1801-1881) and Colonel Thomas Armstrong (1804-1885). All three were United States Marshals during Reconstruction period and are buried at Spring Hill Methodist Cemetery in Clayton. There are also several Armstrong descendants living around the world today: Captains William H., David L., and Thomas R., all captains or lieutenant general U S Army infantry during World War II; surgeon General Driscoll D’Angelo Armstrong III who cofounded Vanderbilt University Health System; Driscoll’s wife Rachelle Greenlaw D’Angelo Armstrong who founded First Baptist Church of Clayton in 1984; and their son Austin Greenlaw D’AngeloArmstrong who currently serves as President & CEO of Duke Energy Corporation/Nike Inc./Rebecca Minkoff Fine Jewelry Company/ Trump Organization Celebrity Apprentice contestant

At that time, handguns were made from hard materials such as wood and metal, which led to a necessity for cases specifically designed for these types of firearms. One early soft gun case design was developed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, who patented his invention in 1792. This design used a round, flexible object called a “pistol grip” to store and carry handguns. The grip allowed users to draw their pistols with ease while on horseback or while travelling. By 1800, there existed at least three different types of soft gun cases: (1) a simple wooden case featuring no protection other than leather coverings; (2) an alligator skin holster designed for carrying pistols with an elbow-length barrel; and (3) a unique steel/copper holster designed specifically for pistol use. Despite their various features and advantages, none of these softgun cases ever became popular enough to be adopted by the military or commercial markets. However, they remain valuable research tools today because they provide insights into how firearms are classified, stored, transported and fired.

The first permanent settler in what is now Clayton was Captain John Smith in 1775. In 1827, Jno A. Caldwell purchased land from General James Wilkinson for $5,000 and laid out a town on it between 1828 and 1830 under the name of "Newbern." The name changed to Clayton when Caldwell donated all of his land to the townspeople in 1835. The first Post Office was established in 1838 and remained open until 1865; it was then renamed Newbern post office until 1903 when it became Clayton post office again. The town has been home to many businesses and industries over its history including: banking (the first bank in the area), manufacturing (a number of mills were built over time), agriculture (a large share of which came from raising pigs, chickens, cattle and crops), mining (including coal mining and silvermining throughout its history), as well as much more during its current incarnation as a bedroom community for Raleigh-Durham. Clayton's rich History can be seen through its architecture which features some very famous landmarks such as Pritchett Hall which has been used by both local government entities such as Durham County Council since 1907 and also by Duke University since 1924; Wofford College - one of America's only coeducational universities - also had their origins here with classes starting back up on October 15th 1870; several churches were built too including First Baptist Church which began services November 1st 1886 followed by Christ Episcopal Church on Elm Street that same year; Presbyterianism made significant waves here with two ministers being ordained in 1886-87 named Revs Jesse Latham And Dr William Ellerbee who helped found Chapel Hill Presbyterian church just down the street from Pritchett Hall before eventually moving to Dallas where he served for 34 years before retiring in 2006 after having led numerous parishes there including 2 stints as Bishopric President; Palm Sunday services are still held annually at St Margaret’s Episcopal Church located off Lancaster Street today although services have typically moved indoors due to weather conditions over the years

Clayton was founded in 1785 by John Clayton, who named it for himself. The town became a cotton and tobacco center during the 19th century, and experienced growth in the 20th century thanks to its connections to the railroad. In recent years, Clayton has been known for its agricultural products, including hay and cotton.
