Through all of this experimentation and trade, Tom came up with the idea to use two adjustable iron posts to hold his targets instead of just one. This eventually led to the development of today’s target holders! The Target Holder consisted of a metal frame with a round, black mirror on one side and a white paper target image opposite on the other. It was easy to hold and allowed shooters to take pictures at close range without having to worry about hitting their targets. Other early holders included the Dutch Shooter's Holder from 1907 and the American Shooting Star Holder from 1908. both of which were designed for use with revolvers. The American Shooting Star Holder was also equipped with an adjustable crossbar that allowed it to be used in different directions, making it perfect for portrait photography or video recording. By World War II, shooter's had become more sophisticated and they began using film cameras instead of point-and-shoot models. As a result, original Target Holders became obsolete and were replaced by new versions that incorporated features specific to digital cameras like digital magnification brackets and automatic focus systems. In fact, even today some target holders are still in use as backups for digital cameras!
