Clayton is a small town in Johnston County, North Carolina. The population was 2,673 at the 2000 census. It is the namesake of Clayton College and its sports teams, the Clayton Panthers. The first shootings in Clayton took place on October 17th, 1892. A group of men had gathered to shoot chickens when one of them got too close to a farmer's cow and it ran away. This man then shot at the cow and hit it, wounding it severely. There were multiple shootings in Clayton until 1895 when there was only one incident where someone was killed and two were injured. In 1901, a store owner named Waddell made an investment in Earmuffs Firearms Manufacturing Company which soon became known as "The Earmuffs Gun Corporation." The earmuff company produced over 1 million earmuffs between 1901-1910 with an emphasis on military use such as artillery protection and air defense. In 1915 Earmuffs merged with American Made Muzzle Loading Ammunition Company which helped bring about increased production for both companies during World War I due to advances in ammunition technology. After World War I endedearmuffs production decreased until they resumed after Prohibition began in 1933. In 1957 Earmuffs merged with Browning Firearms Corporation which allowed for increased production while still focusing on militaries and law enforcement use such as air defense systems and muzzleloading shotgunsners

Clayton is a city in North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the state and is located on the Piedmont Plain. The first people to arrive in what is now Clayton were hunter-gatherers who lived near present-day Gastonia and other nearby towns. In 1794, Colonel James Bowles of the Continental Army visited the area and noted that there were "no Indian marks" visible from where he was standing. He called it "the most fertile spot in all this part of America". In 1819, General John Cefalu conveyed 640 acres (240 hectares) of land to Amos Dickson for $3 worth of goods and labor with an understanding that if Dickson built a mill within three years, he would receive an additional 640 acres (240 hectares). The town began as a small farming community with about 10 residents. By 1840, it had grown to over 100 people. The cotton industry became dominant around 1880 and by 1920 Clayton had become one of the largest cotton markets in United States history. The city's growth continued until World War II when its population decreased because of military production relocation during the war effort. After World War II, Clayton experienced rapid growth due to new oil discoveries in eastern North Carolina which led to job creation throughout much of downtown Clayton as well as suburban development just outside of town limits; however, economic decline has followed since then
