Clayton is a small town in North Carolina, located about 20 miles northeast of Raleigh. The population was 1,460 at the 2010 census. It lies in Wake County and is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Clayton first appeared onmaps in 1792 when it was known as Hanceville. It has been spelled Claydon since 1806. The word "clay" comes from an English word meaning "fine to grind." The village was organized around 1800 and became the county seat of Wake County in 1836. In 1907, a post office called Clayton opened and remained in operation until it was closed by the Postal Service in 1959. In 1865, General John Custer's army attacked and burned Fort Fisher near present-day Clayton. The attack helped spur development in this area and many people began to settle here because they saw an opportunity for land grant opportunities. Many farmers settled here after getting their grants from the military commander. When Fort Fisher was rebuilt, most of these settlers moved away because they found better prospects elsewhere. However, some stayed behind to start new businesses or ranching operations while others took up farming again after Dodge City changed its name to Clayton back in 1912 honoring General James Biderman who had led the defense against Apache Indians during the Mexican-American War years earlier

Clayton is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The Clayton post office was established in 1836 and closed in 1954. The town was founded in 1836 as a small community on the southern edge of what is now Rutherford County. In 1847, it became part of Edgecombe County and then Wake County before becoming part of Rutherford County in 1871. The first store in Clayton opened on Main Street in 1836 and remained open until 1954. A cotton gin was built by John Sitton around 1840 and operated until 1870; it was replaced by a more recent structure, the Johnston Cotton gin, which opened in 1922. In addition to its retail stores, Clayton also had several manufacturing businesses that produced goods such as clothing, shoes, agricultural products and printing supplies. One of these businesses was Jardine Manufacturing Company which manufactured bricks for buildings and other construction purposes from 1850 to 1970; it has since been dissolved. Others that produced goods include Smith & Wesson Arms Company (founded 1865), Wilkinson Manufacturing Company (founded 1880), Hargrave Brothers Tobacco Company (founded 1902) and Beecham Electrical Products Corporation (founded 1907). In 2004, Clayton celebrated its 350th anniversary with an event called "Clayton's 350th Birthday Celebration" which included concerts by local bands as well as parade through downtown Clayton featuring local dignitaries including Governor Sonny Perdue and Mayor Gayle McLaughlin. In 2006, the town hosted the annual NC State Fair which attracted over 400 exhibitors from across eastern North Carolina as well as visitors from all over northeastern United States
Clayton was founded in 1836 by Methodist missionaries, George and Martha Clayton. It was named for General James B. Clayton, who led the Union army during the American Civil War. The Claysons erected a log cabin on the site in 1837 and started a cattle ranch. In 1847, they moved to what is now Rutherford County and began an agricultural economy with growing crops and raising livestock. They also constructed a sawmill on their farm until it burned down in 1854. The Claysons bought the mill back from its owner and continued to operate it as their primary business until 1906 when they sold it to Soddy-Dow Chemical Company.
