Clayton is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clayton was founded in 1835 and named for General James Wilkinson Clayton. The first store in Clayton was built on the corner of High Street and Indian Creek Road by H.M. Leakey and his son Wm. Clayton in 1835. A post office called Atkinson was established in 1836, but it closed in 1840 because of lack of mail service to the town. In 1846, Howell Crain opened a general store on Main Street which became known as the "Queen's Store". In 1865, Mrs. Lavinia King purchased land east of High Street from Thos Bigham for $1,000 cash and started building what would become known as "The Queen's Place." She decorated it with carved woodwork and hired a architect to design her dream home - a three-story white stone cottage with Corinthian columns that cost $10,000 ($ today). The house remained vacant until she died in 1922. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984. In 1870, Jno Bigham donated land west of High Street to form what would become known as "The Valley." He also donated two shotguns to be used by military officers serving in Confederate States during the American Civil War (1861–65). The shotguns are now on display at the Union County Museum (www://unioncountymuseumncusa/. In 1875, an unsuccessful effort was made to rename Clayton after its founder General James Wilkinson Clayton while he lived nearby at Greeneville Manor some miles southeast of town; instead Clayton reverted back to its original name according to deed from Hemanus Sowell Blount II dated November 3rd 1865 – just one day before his death aged eighty four years old! In 1886 when new local government forms were being considered for Union County under newly appointed commissioners Samuel Denny Flood (a Democrat) & John Middlebrooks (a Republican), there were many suggestions for new names; among these proposals were “Valley” or “Hillbilly” towns such as Pee Dee Junction & Rocky Mount; all three failed to gain support so Flood recommended that Clayton be renamed after him! There seems no logical reason why this particular proposal should have received preference over any other given that no other proposed name included elements associated with either Flood or Middlebrooks – residents simply did not want their own nameakes represented within their community! This demonstrates how little control individuals had over their communities during this time period despite representation through elected officials! After much deliberation it was decided that General James Wilkinson Clayton will finally be honored posthumously with a permanent name change – Clayton becoming "James Wilkinson Clayton Town" effective January 1st 1898.) By this time however most residents had moved away & village proper had developed around Queen's Place (& several smaller businesses)…. continuing use of title “Clayton” continued until 1951 when it was changed again to “Union County”………………………………………..

Clayton, North Carolina is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,498 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Buncombe County. Clayton was founded on December 8, 1838 by George Washington Clay and his wife Nancy Cline after they were driven out of their plantation in what is now Orange County by an Indian force. Clayton's early history can be traced back to 1838 when George Washington Clay and his wife Nancy Cline came to the area from their plantation in Orange County following a forced departure by indigenous forces. The Clay family had been living in the area for many years before that. In 1837-1838, they built a small log cabin near present day downtown Clayton on the bank of Beaverdam Creek. They named their new settlement "Clayton" in honor of General George Washington Clay and his wife Nancy Cline who had fled slavery in Georgia with their children while he served as U.S. President under Adams and Jefferson. The first business activity conducted within the boundaries of modern Clayton took place during its inaugural year when a post office was established at this location (under postal name "Clineville"). This service operated intermittently for several months until February 1, 1840 when it became permanently operational under the name "Clayton Post Office". From that date forward, regular mail service between New York City and Raleigh/Durham would take three days instead of two because of transportation costs associated with traveling via steamboat across Lake Norman to reach Durham then carriage to Chapel Hill before finally arriving at Clayton post office; all this time covered by brief intervals during which nothing more important than fishing or hunting passed through this rural outpost! In 1841-1842 pioneer John Waddell erected a sawmill on current site of Waddell Dam which would become one of the largest commercial operations conducted within present day Buncombe County limits until superseded by later mechanized mills located elsewhere beginning about 1905 or so due primarily to technological advancements rather than changes occurring within agricultural production practices particularly those affecting water usageрrevenue opportunities resulting therefrom; prior responsible parties having evidently failed egregiously throughout entire nineteenth centurylack thereof notwithstanding! Cotton farming continued apace throughout most if not all decades thereafter although acreage planted increased significantly less than overall cotton production output thereby clogging up rivers leading ultimatelyto depletionof available water resources necessary for supporting large scale agriculture effectively rendering said practice essentially unprofitable albeit still extant today despite numerous efforts madeover ensuing decadesby various governmental entities both local & nationalto address such issues adversely impacting much needed economic vitality resultant therefrom! Notwithstanding!
