Clayton is a city in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 27,872 at the 2010 census. The original town site was laid out in 1825 and called Cherokee for the Cherokee people who were then living there. It was renamed to Clayton after General Robert Clayton, an American Revolutionary War officer and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The city was incorporated on December 4, 1907.
Clayton, North Carolina is a town in Morehead County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Morehead County. The first European to visit Clayton was Capt. James Clark on October 7, 1775 as part of his survey for the government of Kentucky. He named it after Admiral John Clayton who had been killed during the French and Indian War in 1763. On February 25, 1802 when Clay arrived in Morehead County he donated land to be used as the county seat and today's Clayton is one of America's oldest continuously populated townships or villages. Clayton was organized as a town on November 3, 1824 by a group of citizens from parts of surrounding counties that were then part of Hardin County (now Scott County). The name originated with Commodore John Farragut who sailed into the harbor atlexicoanthus early in 1825 on board USS "Harpers Ferry". His ship stopped off shore near what is now Clayton-Moreheadville while en route to operate against Spanish forces south of Mobile Bay. Farragut called this spot "Farragut Landing" which stuck and has been used ever since by historians and locals alike as their local term for what became known as Clayton after him - an event they celebrate each year with a parade through downtown streets on Saturday evening followed by dinner at an old plantation house called "Farragut House". In 1827 Colonel William Bradford purchased 640 acres (256 hectares) including what is now downtown Clayton from Captain Clark for $1 per acre (0.50 per kilometer²). This gave rise to speculation that soon enough there would be a village here since village lots could only be acquired by purchase from gentlemen owning more than 200 acres (80 hectares). However no such village materialized until 1830 when General David Henderson bought 10 acres (4 hectares) just east of downtown for $10 plus 50 cents per acre ($0.20/km²), making it one of America’s earliest township villagesPatchogue Township was organized about two miles west northwest of present day Clayton on December 12th1830 but failed because noone wanted to move there because they enjoyed living close to homefolks still celebrated New Year’s Day fireworks display over Old Fort Tryon down Main Street every year until 1938
