Clayton, North Carolina is a town in Jackson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. Clayton was founded in 1837 and named for General Robert E. Lee (1807-1865). In 1800, General John Floyd (1775-1836) settled in what is now Clayton and named it for him. Clayton is also home to several historical sites, including: The John Fenton House, which was built c1820 as a slave quarters for white workers on what would become known as "Fenton's Mill"; The Battlefields National Battlefield Park; and The Old Plantation House Museum, which is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm from May 1 through October 14th only.

The original name for Clayton was Hope Hill after a hill in Scotland that had been named for one of the missionary fathers. The town's first store opened on May 5, 1839, and the first post office opened on December 7, 1840. The first school was built in 1845. In 1861, Clayton became a city under the terms of an act of Congress passed to allow towns within Wake County to petition for statehood. On July 1, 1865, it merged with Cary to become Cary Towne (an honorific). Clayton's downtown is home to Interstate 85 and State Route 126 which run concurrently through its streetscape and intersections with local roadsides providing views of both cities as they merge into each other on either side of I-85 just east of downtown Clayton's limits . Downtown also includes several large shopping centers including Grand Mall/Target Field and JCPenney Center which are anchored by Sears Holdings Corporation — Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Inc., JC Penney Company —and secondarily Lord & Taylor Department Stores before their bankruptcy sold off their leases in 2014; Third Way Business Park across I-85 from Target Field; numerous small businesses clustered around Main Street shops near Interstate 95; PNC Bank Stadium which opened in 2007 adjacent to Tyson Foods Inc.'s Hartzell Farms Shopping Center; Pioneer Place mall across I-95 from JCPenney Center; more than 20 restaurants located throughout town center inside or outside pedestrian malls open 24 hours a day/7 days a week . In addition there are many private residences scattered throughout the town center giving residents plenty of opportunity for privacy when needed but also providing easy access to services like municipal services like streetlights and recycling collection without having to leave their homes
Clayton was founded in 1755 by James Caldwell and his brother, John. The Caldwell brothers were pioneer farmers and are remembered for their many contributions to the town. Clayton's early years were difficult, because it was a frontier town with no permanent residents. However, the Caldwells persevered and in 1815 they donated land to build the first courthouse in North Carolina. In 1817, they also donated funds to create a school district which would eventually include Clayton. In 1827, the first store opened in Clayton and soon thereafter it became an important commercial center on the eastern edge of North Carolina. The town continued to grow throughout its history and by 1887 it had reached its present size.
