Clayton, North Carolina is home to the world's first gun target, located on Cobb Island in 1876. The target was designed by George Washington Carver and built by his son and namesake, George Washington Carver. The target still stands today and can be found across from the Clayton County Courthouse. The shooting of balls at a gun target originated in England in the mid-19th century. Gunners would shoot balls off a stand or into a hole in the ground with targets shaped like horses, ducks, cows, or other animals. In 1876, Clayton County commissioners voted to install a gun target on Cobb Island as part of an outdoor recreation program. The original carver-built Target still stands today and can be reached via a short walk from the courthouse lawns. Visitors are able to take photos of thetarget from all over its circumference before firing casts at it using Taurus handguns fitted with metal plates that track how many rounds have been fired.
