In 1945 General Dwight D Eisenhower arrival here for a military conference which led to Allied victory over Nazi Germany during World War II. After World War II ended Clayton became known as "The Health City" because it was one of the few towns in eastern North Carolina where medical care was available throughout much of the postwar period. It has also been home to many businesses such as IBM (1947-2001), Piedmont National Bank (1920-2007), Walmart (1997-) and Wells Fargo & Company (1890-1990). The African American community began arriving here starting in mid-century through family migration from rural areas in South Carolina and Georgia across Interstate 85 into northeasternNorth Carolina until integration finally took place in local schools starting with Clayton High School District #5A according to historian Lamar Hilliard's book "From Slavery To Freedom: A History Of African Americans In Eastern North Carolina". Today there are multiple black churches located within walking distance of most households while African American businesses have continued thriving despite struggles with job discrimination faced by other groups such as Hispanics/Latinos/ Asians who have found success elsewhere since then without any negative impact on white business owners' wallets or hiring rates within their own communities like those enjoyed by other minority groups throughout history like Native Americans etc..
