Clayton is a city in and the county seat of Clay County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 33,083 as of 2018. It is the largest city in the state of North Carolina and the largest city east of Raleigh. Clayton's history dates back to 1855 when it was founded by Scots-Irish settlers. Clayton has been home to a number of gun sights over its history. The first known sighting of a firearm in Clayton was on July 6, 1855 when James A. Fenton used his rifle to sight in an animal at a fairgrounds west of town. The first shooting range in Clayton opened in 1903 and was located on what is now downtown streets between South Main Street and Exchange Place. It functioned as an annual event throughout much of the 20th century until it closed due to deteriorated infrastructure and dwindling patronage. The first handgun registration law passed in Clay County took effect on December 12, 1907; however, registration did not begin until January 1st 1908 because there were not enough handguns available for initial issuance. In 1916–1917, Clayton hosted the Eastern Gun Show which attracted attention from proponents ofgun control legislation across the United States who saw this show as an opportunity to promote their cause during oneofthe most significant gun shows ever held in America at that time On October 10th, 1950 two gunmen shot into traffic near downtown Clayton while driving away from a local shopping mall after robbing several people inside . One victim died instantly upon impact while another survived with multiple gunshot wounds but sustained no life-threatening injuries . The shooters were apprehended within minutes by police negotiators using information they had gleaned from their victims' relatives about planned targets outside the mall
