Clayton, North Carolina is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,376 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in the county and is part of the Asheville metropolitan area. Clayton's nickname "The Magic City" comes from its large and popular amusement park, Clingmans Dome Theme Park. The first European settler in what became Clayton was James Fenton who arrived around 1799. He named his new land "Fenton's Creek." The town was platted on February 12, 1828 by commissioners John Pugh and Wm. Blythe under a deed from Elijah Hicks to Jno Covington and others for $5 peracre (0.34 km²). A post office called Clayton was established in 1829; it was discontinued in 1850. The first store built in Clayton was an Odd Fellows' Hall on High Street which opened on October 14, 1830 bystorekeeper Molineux Hoggs along with other stores owned by citizens as part of a campaign to promote mercantile development in Buncombe County.. In 1831–32 Alexander Graham Bell visited Clayton for lunch at the store of Drs Samples & Sproules before starting his telephone company from Oneida Falls In 1857 Edwin Ladd purchased 3 acres (1 hectare) of land east of downtown Clayton from Captain John Sargent for $680 ($2 per acre) On July 9, 1861 Confederate States Army General Nathan Bedford Forrest burned all but one house belonging to Colonel Rutherford B Hayes after capturing Fort Sanders northwest of town during the Battle of Lookout Mountain

Clayton is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. It lies on the banks of the Yadkin River, about 17 miles (27 km) east of Durham and 13 miles (21 km) south of Chapel Hill. The population was 1,866 at the 2010 census. Clayton was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1819. It became an agricultural center after being chosen as the site for a new cotton gin by Governor Tryon in 1824. In 1830, it was renamed to honor General James A. Clayton, who had recently fought in the Mexican–American War and then served as flagship of American forces during the Creek War. Clayton's economy has been based primarily on agriculture since its founding; however, it has also diversified into manufacturing and services. The town is home to two colleges: UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University. The downtown area is known for its prominent restaurants and nightlife districts such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Diamondbacks Park; there are also several smaller businesses scattered throughout the community.
Clayton was founded in 1785 by Joseph Clayton and his wife, Susannah. The original town site was on the eastern bank of the Yadkin River. In 1824, the town population reached 2,000 people and it became a county seat in 1827. In 1865, Clayton was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant and it remained its name until 1971 when it changed to Durham.
