Clayton is a town in Polk County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Clayton was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1819 and named for Colonel Alexander Clayton, who purchased land in the town from the Cherokee Nation. The first gunsmith in Clayton was John Higginson and his shop opened on Main Street in 1824. In 1845, Nathaniel Bacon became the first person to fire a rifle at a fairgrounds using powder and shot made from small trees found near Claytonsville Presbyterian Church. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Easley surrendered here after his army's defeat at Fort Sumter; this event is generally considered to be the end of the Civil War in North Carolina. In 1865, Union General Jubal Early attacked Confederate forces under General Pendergrast located here; Early's attack resulted in over 50 deaths and 100 injuries among both Union and Confederate troops. After 1865, many residents left Clayton for various reasons including Reconstruction policies that were unpopular with many locals. However, some local businesses continued to operate until well into the late 20th century due to their location within close proximity to factories used in munitions production during World War II and other periods of industrial growth throughout North Carolina. Today, much of what once constituted downtown Clayton has been replaced by new development while portions of older buildings remain as cultural landmarks or tourist attractions.
