Clayton is a town in Anson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,046 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Yadkin River and measures 9 miles (14 km) by 7 miles (12 km). The community was founded in 1828 by Colonel John Clayton and his wife Elizabeth Forester. The name is from an English place-name meaning "place of many rabbits." The first post office opened in 1830. In 1840, the town had a population of 350; by 1850, it had increased to 2,000. In 1860, Clayton became the county seat of Anson County. In 1875–76, Captain John Fenton organized a road party that traveled overland from Petersburg to Lexington to survey new land for sale in what is now Davidson County. When they reached Clayton they found that there were no roads leading there and so they built one themselves. Since then, various businesses have operated around the clock without fail: ice cream parlors open late into the night during summer months because there's no store closeby that opens at 4 p.m., do-it-yourself quilting studios abound because there are no stores with supplies available after 5 p.m., gas stations offer 24/7 service while supplies last and more than 20 small convenience stores sell provisions such as cigarettes and candy bars from 6 a.m.–10 p.m.—all with limited hours of operation due to seasonal restrictions on sales items like gasoline products and grocery items

Auburn College founded here in 1881 became UNC-Chapel Hill which moved to Durham in 1949 before becoming Duke University in 1975 before moving again to Chapel Hill in 1998 where it remains today. During World War II, Clayton participated actively with many other cities across America through various programs including war bonds and patriotic displays throughout town center areas daily from 1942-1945 Cotton production peaked during this time but has gradually declined over time due to competition from other crops such as soybeans and rice although some mills continue to produce cottonseed oil into the present day In recent years, efforts have been made by local businesses and citizens to revitalize downtown Clayton with an emphasis on arts & culture along with green space The city of Clayton celebrates its rich history every year with celebrations that include special events like parades and festivals throughout downtown while also hosting educational opportunities such as summer school for students ranging fromelementary school age through college age
