Clayton, North Carolina is a town located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg–Nashville metropolitan area and is one of three cities in that area with a combined population over 100,000. It is also one of four cities in the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill Combined Statistical Area with a population over 150,000. Clayton was founded by settlers who arrived in 1771 from Scotland. In 1801 it became a county seat and remained so until 1870 when Gastonia took control as the state capital and Clayton became an independent city. A post office was established in Clayton on January 1, 1868, and remained in operation until December 12, 1902. The name "Clayton" appears to have originated from an Indian word meaning "place where deer now graze." The first settler to use this name may have been James Mclntyre who arrived around 1771 from Scotland. Some sources claim that John Clayton (1747-1824) purchased land near what is now known as Old Claymont Road and named his new home after his father's death two years earlier there on October 8th (the date according to some). This story goes that while out walking one day he observed some deer grazing on some high ground about a mile east of present day Clayton Boulevard; upon closer inspection he realized these were not wild deer but rather animals under domestication which had been brought over from England or Scotland several years earlier by Colonel James McMurtry Jr., founder of McMurtry County, Kentucky (now West Virginia). From this observation John decided to naming his home after this initial discovery - for him it would become "Old Claymont Road". When he moved into his house next door on November 6th 1772 Others began moving into what would become known as New Claymont Road including President George Washington Carver Sr., General David Hunter who served during both American Revolutionary War & First World War; Judge Elijah McCoy who later served as Mayor of Charlotte; Captain David Bogue who went on to be Georgia's Governor during Reconstruction; Drury Harper who ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Charlotte in 1901 & 1903; Mrs Atwater Witherspoon whose family owned much acreage east of Old Claymont Rd.; Judge Samuel Inskeeps wife Sally died young leaving behind six children plus namesake Sam Inskeeps heir apparent - Reverend James Ewing Caldwell II Cloyd III born May 10th 1932 In 1801 Clayton became the county seat because Gastonia refused to recognize Henderson County as the proper place for such an important county seat because its courthouse did not yet exist and Gastonia wanted only itself to be center stage with all other counties subordinated thereto

The first store in Clayton opened in 1834 and the first school in 1830. The community grew rapidly due to its contributions to post-Civil War America. In 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, most of northcentral North Carolina fell into Union hands and Clayton became part of Henderson County. From 1865 until 1971, it was one of 12 counties in Henderson County ruled by the Republican Party. In 1971, however, Republicans lost control of Henderson County and Clayton reverted back to Democratic rule; this continued until 2000 when Republican hegemony ended with the creation of new county government structures across North Carolina. Clayton has experienced dramatic changes over time - from a struggling small town during World War II to one that has thrived as an agricultural center since the turn of the century. Although today's economy leans more towards services than agriculture, there are still some significant landmarks and citizens associated with Clayton’s past that can be found throughout its residents today (and even older). One such landmark is Old Main School which served as both a schoolhouse and courthouse from 1834 until 1951; it now serves as a museum open daily from 9am-4pm for tours ($5 per person). Another key figure associated with Clayton’s history is Reverend Drury who preached here from 1845 until his death in 1893; he remains an important local figure today and his tomb can be found inside Old Main School. Reverend Drury also helped lead efforts to create what would become known as “The Greenville News” - one of southern North Carolina's earliest newspapers - which started publication on October 1st, 1851 within days of its founding in Shelbyville (now Charlotte). Other major figures associated with Clayton include Captain John Atherton –generally considered founder or main developerof Caldwell Lake - who arrived here around 1795 while serving under General Nathanael Greene during The Revolutionary War; General Ethan Allen fought alongside him at Saratoga; Moses Beach who helped build US Fort Fisher located on present day bayou Mobile;and Colonel Wm Hite who built New Bern State Prison just outside town limits (later renamed Chapel Hill Correctional Institution).
