Clayton, North Carolina is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 4,819 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. The town was founded in 1871 by white farmers and their slaves who moved from Kershaw County to join what would become Spartanburg County. Clayton's economy has been based largely on agriculture since it was first settled. However, over time it has diversified into manufacturing and other businesses. Clayton is home to the University of South Carolina's Clemson University campus as well as numerous small businesses and educational institutions, including Baylor High School and Pee Dee Technical College. In addition to its agricultural base and tourist attractions such as nearby Mount Pleasant National Battlefield Park, downtown Clayton features several large retail areas with a variety of services available from small businesses to larger chain stores such as JCPenney and Sears Roebuck & Co.. The first store in the town opened in 1814. In 1836, the town had a population of 100 people and a post office. The first school in the town was built in 1837 and the first courthouse was built in 1840. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered all noncombatants to leave Clayton before its destruction became apparent; this order led to many local businesses closing their doors as they were not able to provide goods or services to Confederate troops retreating through the area during the battle of Gettysburg. In 1865, after Union General Ulysses S. Grant's army entered southern North Carolina and drove out Confederate forces, Governor Waddell granted voting rights to black citizens of Clayton so that they could participate fully in American democracy while remaining citizens of their home state. During World War II, Clayton served as an airfield for RAF Leigh-Mallory during Operation Torch which ended Nazi aggression against Southern Europe
