Gun barrels have a long and tumultuous history in Clayton, North Carolina. The first guns were made out ofaked tree stumps and other local materials in the early 1800s. Clayton's son-in-law John Wofford donated land for what became known as SouthPark Mall which anchored Interstate 85 in eastern Mecklenburg County until it closed in 2013 after more than 30 years of operation. Clayton has had many challenges over its history including World War II when many businesses were destroyed or lost their jobs due to the war effort; a tornado that struck in 1951 which killed 22 people; an oil well explosion which created a crater 20 feet deep and 4 feet wide that still remains today; Hurricane Floyd which caused extensive damage to trees, power lines and homes in the town; and most recently – Hurricane Harvey which affected parts of western Mecklenburg County late last year causing significant damage to homes, infrastructure and businesses

The town was named for General Nathaniel Clayton who fought in the Battle of Saratoga and became famous for his victories over Native Americans throughout the antebellum period. The first school in Clayton opened in 1824 and taught students from Kindergarten through High School. A store opened in 1830 which served as the nucleus of what would become the town's businesses. By 1840, there were six stores, two schools, one Baptist church and three residences. In 1851, cotton gin operations arrived and quickly replaced agriculture as the mainstay of Clayton's economy; however, most residents still continued to farm until around 1860 when manufacturing began to take center stage with new technology such as textile mills that sprang up all over eastern North Carolina during this time period. In 1860-61 General John Coody led an army against Confederate forces at Second Manassas while living at nearby Kinston; he later became president of NC State University (1914-1945). After serving as governor (1885-89) under Governor John Broughton and Ulysses S Grant (1865-68), Rutherford B Hayes (1868-72) appointed him Collector of Internal Revenue within one year - demonstrating how important revenue generation was then - Hayes also vetoed legislation establishing an agricultural depression commission which would have helped those farmers struggling economically during this time period due to lack of credit availability etc... In 1916 Clayton lost its status as a town when it merged with neighboring Durham but regained it after Durham withdrew its offer because it didn't include plans for industry or commercial development within its boundaries resulting in much congestion on Main Street between these two towns! In 1971 Concordia College erected a large student union building on Main Street which currently houses various offices including library services
Clayton was founded in 1775 by General James Morehead. The town grew rapidly due to the production of cotton and other crops. In 1827, Clayton became a county seat and was renamed Great Clarendon.
