Today, Claytons vibrant downtown areas are home to several businesses including Barnes & Noble (the first store open in town), PNC Bank (one of Northern Carolinas two largest banks), Subway sandwich shops (Claytons only Dunkin' Donuts), four churches (two Baptist and two Methodist), three schools (grades pre-K-12th through 12th grade), local jail facilities which house up to 180 inmates each day during peak hours; as well as smaller businesses located throughout town like hardware stores and welding supply stores

Clayton, North Carolina is a small town located in the heart of the Pender County region of North Carolina. The population of Clayton was 9,872 at the 2000 census. The town has a rich history dating back to its early days as an agricultural community. A number of events and characters have played a role in the development of Clayton over the years. The first residents of Clayton were white farmers who arrived in 1845 from Virginia. They built their homes on what is now known as Mud Lane which ran along the banks of Clinch River. Claytons growth started slowly but steadily over time thanks to its location and access to resources. In 1892, local livestock ranchers decided to build a new store on Main Street near where they currently operate their business today. This helped start an era of economic growth for Clayton which continued until present day. Clayton has always been home to many interesting people including two Governors of North Carolina, several Senators, as well as many prominent politicians and businessmen. One such figure is former Mayor Floyd Knoop who was born in Clayton and still resides there today with his wife and children.
Clayton was founded in 1792 by Hugh Clayton. The town was named after the Clay family which donated the land for the town. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1820 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1825, Clayton became a county seat and in 1830, it became an incorporated municipality. In 1838, the first courthouse was built and in 1840, the first school was established. By 1850, Clayton had a population of over 500 people and by 1860 it had reached 1,500 people. In 1870, Clayton became an independent city and in 1880 it annexed neighboring townships.
