In 1814, while Colonel James Moore was commandant at Fort Apache Hill, he ordered Major General David Ramsay to establish a new military post at what is now known as primitive Camp McClain near present-day Clayton after learning that Native Americans had been raiding white settlements along the coast. This post became known as Fort McLaughlin after Major General Ramsay's aide-de-camp, Captain John McClain. Fort McLaughlin was abandoned by American troops in 1827 following an outbreak of yellow fever that killed many soldiers and civilians near hereabouts. A few years later, Indian fighter Simon Bolivar burned down some homes west of modern day Clayton while hunting deer during a campaign against Creek Indians nearby; this event helped convince American authorities to relocate all Indian posts east of Franklin Mills Road to within easy reach of Charlotteville through land transfers from British relatives – including both George Washington Kerr Jr., then governor general and future Ulysses S Grant – during their tenure as president James Kenedy (1829–31). A railroad station was built on what is now I-85 southbound just north of modern day Clayton in 1906 when North Carolina Railroad began operations from Raleigh to Durham via Old Chapel Road northwest of today's town center; this railway depot served both local passengers and freight trains until 1974 when Amtrak relocated its main headquarters from Wilmington to Richmond Virginia due to budget cuts federal policymaking circles led by President Richard Nixon.)
