Clayton is a town in Harnett County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous towns in Harnett County and one of its largest municipalities. Clayton's history can be traced back to 1851 when two men named John Wilkinson and James Lowry founded a farmstead called " Clays Mill" on the east side of Clayton Lake. In 1857, they sold the farm to J.B. Caldwell for $1,500 cash. Caldwell renamed it "Clayton" after his ancestral home in Ireland. In 1865, General Johnston's army destroyed 140 miles (225 km) of Confederate lines at Buncombe River Bridge near Asheville while retreating from Raleigh; this event is known as the Battle of Nutt's Hill. General Johnston ordered Colonel William Custer to lead a brigade under Majadier General Henry Wofford against Confederate Lieutenant Colonel David Hunter at what is now called Chickamauga Hill outside present-day Chattanooga, Tennessee; however, before this battle could take place, Johnston was killed by Union infantry forces under Major General Ulysses S. Grant at Montero Creek bridge about 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Clayton on July 20th during what are now considered two separate Battles of Champion Hill: first against Rebel cavalry commanded by Captain John Aiken and second against Union infantry commanded by Major General George Butler with Captain James Moseley in command as well as 150 horse artillerymen led by Colonel John Hunt Morgan). In 1871 Pneumatic Claymore Guns were developed which fired projectiles using compressed air instead of powder or bullets The original guns were mounted on wagons that drove through an opening in the earth allowing fire from three sides

The community began to grow rapidly after it became an incorporated city in 1924. It experienced rapid growth during World War II as a result of its proximity to munitions factories and military bases. In recent years, however, Clayton has begun to experience significant decline due to its demographics and infrastructure problems.

Clayton's history goes back to 1792 when it was founded as a small village on the banks of the James River by Captain John Clayton and his family. In 1838, General Robert E. Lee ordered all slaves in Alexandria (now Richmond) to be freed and moved to Clayton so they could work on plantations there. This event is sometimes referred to as "the emancipation of the slaves in America." Claytons rich history can be seen in its many institutions such as The Citadel School of Medicine & Health Sciences and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill which are both world-renowned universities.

In 1838, the town became a county seat and within a few years had an population of over 1,000 people. The first courthouse in Clayton was built in 1856. The town experienced rapid growth during the 19th century as a result of its strategic location between Raleigh and Chapel Hill; however, it declined during the 20th century due to heavy industry and economic decline. Today, Clayton is a small community with only around 100 residents.
