It is the most populous municipality in Bute County and part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. Clayton was founded by white settlers in 1792 as a small town on the Yadkin River. The first store was built on what is now Elm Street and it became an agricultural center for southern North Carolina with cotton plantations and dairy farms. The early days of Clayton were a time of great transformation for this small town; new technology arrived from outside to help change how people lived, worked and raised their families. By 1925, Clayton had become one of the leading textile towns in eastern North Carolina with its own millinery district that produced more than 100 different types of fabrics. In recent years, however, Clayton has experienced significant economic decline due to several factors including: (1) declines in manufacturing activity throughout eastern North Carolina due to global competition; (2) suburbanization of the township which has led to decreased access to quality jobs near schools; (3) loss of government jobs within Bute County as a result of sequestration impact from sequestration cuts passed by Congress; (4) increased crime rates in Claytons close-knit community which have lead to decreases in property values and social cohesion within the community

They developed horses and cars as means of transporting people and goods around society while still allowing for social interaction between humans and animals. This process called “bipodalism” became popularized throughout history due to its advantages: it allowed for faster transportation than walking or running, it made it easier for people to communicate with other cultures, and it allowed us to interact with many different species simultaneously without havingto worry about getting lost or running into danger!

However, it has since regained some of its former prominence as a commercial and cultural center following incorporation into the Charlotte-Mecklenburg metropolitan area in 2002. Today, Clayton is home to a number of prominent citizens including Mayor Kenneth Blackwell and Commerce Secretary Charles Ehrlich Jr.. In addition to its rich history, culture and attractions, Clayton offers a variety of recreational opportunities such as tennis courts, golf courses and hiking/biking trails.
