In 1941, however, Nazi Germany occupied Clayton and all of North Carolina during World War II. This forced a sharp decline in production at the local factories as well as a decrease in sales at both businesses. However, due to rising awareness of optics after WWII and a resurgence of interest among consumers throughout North Carolina throughout the late 20th century, there has been an revival of production at local factories since that time. Today, Clayton is home to two major optical companies – Apogee Optics and Summit Optics – which produce high-quality optics products for individuals and commercial customers alike.

Clayton is located in Union County, North Carolina. The town was founded in 1827 by Englishmen and named after the Battle of Preston Plantation, which took place in 1781. In 1830, Clayton became a part of the newly formed States of North Carolina. It had a population of about 1,200 people when it was incorporated as a town. The first school opened in 1836 and the first post office was established in 1840. The town experienced growth during the 1850s and 1860s thanks to its location on the Pee Dee River and its access to freight trains that transported goods from South Carolina to North Carolina. By 1870, Clayton had a population of over 4,500 people and it became an important center for cotton farming. During Reconstruction, Clayton played an important role in helping to reopen southern factories following the Civil War.
Clayton, North Carolina is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state of North Carolina. The population was 9,358 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg– Durham metropolitan area and is one of the most economically depressed areas in the state. The town was founded by families who arrived from Virginia in 1828. They were farmers and Dealers, who built closer to each other on larger farms for trading purposes. By 1830, all but one family had left for other parts of North Carolina or Virginia because of economic conditions there. The only remaining family moved to Clayton in 1832 when they discovered a large tract of land with good soil and high prospects for farming. The first school was built in 1835 and it served as a log cabin until 1861 when an addition was built that would become known as the Old Courthouse. In 1865, Clayton voters passed a local option referendum allowing taxes to be levied to support public schools instead of just churches which had been providing education since before that time. This led to construction of what is now called "Clayton Elementary School" on Main Street in 1870 which became known as "The Mother School". In 1893, there were four schools- two middle schools (one originally named "Moses", later renamed "Cook") and two high schools (now known as Clayton High School). A new gymnasium was also constructed that year which served as both school and business headquarters until 1978 when it became home to Beechmont High School after that school's merger with Hendersonville High School

Clayton is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. On July 8, 1886, Clayton and other Unincorporated settlements in Craven County were organized as the Town of Clayton under the name "Clayton and its Inmates." The first incorporation meeting was held on August 3, 1886. The original town plat included both present-day Claytonsville and what is now called Utica Street. The town of Clayton grew rapidly due to its location along the Transylvania Railroad and its close proximity to Raleigh. By 1902, Clayton had a schoolhouse, store, blacksmith shop, Methodist church (the first white-led religious congregation in North Carolina), cotton gin and four barns. A post office was established in 1907; it remained in operation until 1907. In 1928 the Interstate 95 corridor was opened up for traffic through the area with new roads being built nearby including I-95W which connected Raleigh with Charlotte down south; this made Claytonsville an important center for commerce within Craven County as well as providing access to larger metropolitan areas outside of Northern Carolina. This growth led to increased development around Claytonsville such as an amusement park (later known as Universal Studios South) being built on Union Hill between 1932 and 1936 and two large shopping malls being constructed – one on Utica Street between 1946 and 1951 and another on Elmwood Road west of downtown between 1957 and 1959 – all while continuing to provide recreational opportunities for residents like fishing trips off Claysville Lake or a golf tournament at ClaysVILLE Park located just east of town on Wilson Boulevard across from woods operated by Greater Research Station Inc., later known as Clemson University. However with suburbanization throughout much of North Carolina occurring during this time period many students who lived near major cities began attending universities outside of their home states making Claytonsville less attractive to potential homeowners; moreover jobs available within Raleigh began increasingly requiring respondents to have experience working outside the home instead of inside during this time period which resulted in more people moving away from small towns like Claytonsville over these years leading to a decrease in population size by 2010 census figures
