Clayton, North Carolina is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,948 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Rutherford County by population. The name "Clayton" is derived from Cherokee word "kalantzi" meaning "place of safety." The first inhabitants of what is now Clayton were Native Americans who built wigwams on the banks of the Clinch River. They soon moved to other areas in search of more fertile land and eventually abandoned their settlements here. In 1785, surveyor John Nicholson took a survey for Lord Cornwallis and named it after him – which began what was to be an era of growth for this small community. The community grew rapidly during the 1800s because farmers could find no other place to grow crops and expand their businesses. The early settlers were mostly farmer- mechanics and laborers who came from eastern Virginia or Maryland. By 1810, there were over 100 residents in Clayton; most had come here from surrounding counties such as Johnston and Buncombe. During this time period, Clayton became known as a center for education because many families sent their children to local schools while others established themselves as entrepreneurs through their businesses or opened up stores downtown. This prosperity led to rapid growth throughout parts of Rutherford County until 1814 when a disastrous fire destroyed part of town including much of its commercial district including its largest store which reopened within weeks with new business owners! In 1819, General James Ketchum accepted an offer from President James Kenedy to cede all but six square miles (15 km2) of western Rutherford County (inside present-day Raleigh) to Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee so that they could control trade with Yankees going eastward across the state line! This event forever changed Clayton because it effectively ended any hope that this small community might become prosperous again outside of agriculture or manufacturing! This tragedy not only impacted local residents but also embarrassed General Lee himself who upon his return home realized just how important commerce must be if Confederate forces were ever going to succeed in waging war against Yankee forces! He immediately ordered all remaining businesses closed down except for one – which he successfully reopened several months later! After years during which economic stagnation set into place due largely to a lack of investment by locals and postwar trends favoring larger towns over smaller ones like Claytonsville, things began To turnaround in 1948 when Kenneth Pritchard bought out his predecessor's shareholding in JH & Son Storekeepers Association - one of North Carolina's leading retail merchants - giving Claytonsville its first major retail presence since before World War II! Aided by his enterprising wife Esther Pritchard (née Griggs), Kenneth quickly started building up Claytonsville's infrastructure – developing landmarks like Pritchard Plaza shopping mall and starting construction on Phase I (the current downtown core)of what would eventually become known as Triangle Mall

Clayton was founded by John Clayton in 1792. Its first store was established on the corner of High and State Streets. The town grew rapidly, and in 1809 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1814, Clayton became the county seat of Davidson County.
