Clayton, North Carolina is home to a rich history of ammunition production. The city was founded in 1854 by Confederate veterans who had fled to the area following the Battle of Chancellorsville. Ammunition manufacturing began in Claytropolis in 1865 and continued until 1931. The industry produced over 350 million rounds of ammunition per year and helped contribute to the Union victory at Gettysburg. In 1907, Clayton became the first American city to Ratskeller their own Ammunition Plant, which Manufactured small arms ammunition as well as artillery projectiles and rockets. Since World War II, claymore mines have been located within the city limits. These mines produce high-quality explosives that are used in munitions production. Ammunition production has now resumed at the old Clytropolis Mine but with a smaller output than before due to competition from new sources such as China and Russia.

Clayton is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Clayton was John Forster, who arrived in 1794. He named his farm "Forster's Crossing", but it was renamed Claymore when he sold it to James Webb in 1819. In 1837, John Pritchard built the first school in what is now Clayton and named it after his mother: Lucy Pritchard School. The school served students from both Claymore and surrounding farms until 1909 when brick or concrete schools were constructed on both sides of Highway 188 south of town. The post office was established at Clayton on December 12, 1865, by George Witherspoon; it changed its name to Clayton on January 5, 1867. A store and hotel were built there before being replaced by the present courthouse building in 1906. Mormon missionaries visited Claymore during the early 1800s for the LDS Church's Utah Battalion movement across North America; they founded a mission station here on July 15, 1847 (). Mormon pioneers also began traveling through this area in search of land for their communal farm colony near Nauvoo (now Illinois). In 1861–1862 General James Harnett fought an engagement with Confederate forces near this site which resulted in two dead Yankees and one captured Confederate soldier known as Jack Johnson (). This event helped solidify southern support for Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War (). A smallpox epidemic struck Claymore during World War I () and although several hundred people contracted the disease there were no fatalities due to it (); however more than 2200 men and women lost their lives from all causes nationally that year alone (). Many residents moved away following hostilities ENDING DECEMBER 1918 (), some returning home only to fall victim to natural disasters such as Hurricane Hazel which hit North Carolina Hardest during September/October 1945 ();[1][2] most remaining residents relocated permanently or temporarily elsewhere by late 1949.. The last major tornado touched down within fifty miles of Clayton on May 5th 1953.; since then much development has taken place around town including new retail stores,, restaurants,,,, housing developments,,,,,,,,,,,, etc...... Today Clayton remains largely rural with few commercial establishments except for a couple health food stores

Clayton, North Carolina is a small town located in the Pisgah Mountains of northwestern North Carolina. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census and 7,569 as of the 2019 estimate. It lies in Randolph County on the border of Metro Charlotte and Gaston County. The community was founded by James Clayton in 1852 as a result of his purchase of land from the McIntosh and Henderson families. In 1865, Claytontown came into being when a post office called simply "Clayton" was established there. By 1890, it had increased to its current size with residents coming from both Randolph and Gaston Counties. The first school in Clayton opened in 1892. The first store opened in 1896. In 1907, Clayton became the county seat of Randolph County after Gaston County dissolved itself. In 1909, an important coal mining operation took place near Clayton that led to many jobs for locals during World War I.
