The city was founded by Scotsmen in 1792 as a small trading post on the western edge of what is now Clayton County. The name derived from an Indian word meaning "birthplace of humans." In 1836, General Andrew Jackson visited Clayton and pronounced it "the best place in America for cotton." The town grew rapidly during the American Civil War because of its position on both sides of the battle line. By 1870, Clayton had reached its peak with a population of 30,000 people. However, during Reconstruction Clayton experienced heavy violence and decline until it revival following World War II when new businesses began to arrive and industry boomed. After years of decline again during the 1990s, there has been steady growth over recent decades thanks to numerous new businesses opening up and more than $200 million in investments made by developers since 2000. Clayton's rich history can be seen throughout its downtown area which features murals dating back to 1892 depicting life within the early township that would become Clayton County; such as "The Pioneers", depicting pioneer school children learning about agriculture from their teacher Mr. Wilkinson; or "Pioneer Women" featuring women farmers who started farming near Clarksville in 1830 before moving westward into what would become Clayton County; caricatures of local politicians from that time period including one representing slavery (a caricature known as "Old Joe"), A Sketchbook From My Life As A Slave (1890), etc.; On July 4th each year Confederate veterans gather at Main Street square to celebrate America's role in Vicksburg Derby Day by playing patriotic music on streetcars while enjoying refreshments such as hard cider

Clayton is a town in Stanly County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham-Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clayton was founded in 1835 and named for General James B. Clayton, an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War who served as Confederate general during that conflict. Clayton's early history is based on its location on a salt lick on the Cumberland River which made it a desirable place to site military posts and also facilitated trade with surrounding territory. A post office was established there in 1836, and by 1840 it had reached a population of 350 residents. In 1845, John Fenton organized what would become known as the Granville Railroad Company and built a line from Clayton to Granville Springs via Rocky Mount. This railroad helped spur development within Claytons boundaries - including the founding of nearby Lenoir City - and also stimulated trade with eastern Tennessee and Virginia. The first Progress School in Claytons history opened in 1865; it remains one of its most important institutions today. After Garrison's death in 1861, his wife assumed control of his business interests and continued growing them into an empire that included manufacturing businesses such as Jeter & Potter cigars (founded 1870), Ford automobile parts (1876), Pendergast Paper Products (1887), First National Bank (1912) – all now defunct – as well as land holdings that include much of today's downtown area. The Gentrys were instrumental not only in Claytons growth but also their philanthropy; they donated land to numerous local charities including Presbyterian Hospital (1902) – now one of Raleigh’s leading healthcare providers – Carruth Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1911), Baptist Tabernacle(founded 1930), both located on present-day Randolph streets between Elizabeth Avenue South and Interstate 480 North
Clayton was founded in 1757 by the Reverend Jedediah Clayton and his wife Deborah. The town was named for General George Washington who, when he moved from Virginia to North Carolina in 1755, visited the area and recommended it for settlement. The first store opened in Clayton in 1758. In 1819, the town became a county seat of Newton County.
