Crawford of the Second Regiment of Volunteer Cavalry purchased two Winchester pistols from a gunsmith in Charlotte and became the first person to use them in hostilities during the American Civil War. In 1828, General James Longstreet drove off American Indians who had occupied Native territory northeast of Charlotte near Gaston Avenue into Indian Country; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of modern-day Pee Dee Valley region east of I-95 (and west of US 29/NC 50). As commerce grew throughout central NC due primarilyto railroad development – including key connections with Wilmington via Raleigh & Durham Railroad Company mainline – many different neighborhoods sprung up around downtown: Gastonia (the original core), Davidson Heights (later part of uptown), Claytonwood (near Interstate 95), Hunters Point Naval Shipyard area northwest of Interstate 95 (now part of Dragon Boat Landing) – all while Yonge Street stayed essentially unchanged structurally despite growing population density; today’s inner city areas include parts close to I-95/US 29/NC 50 but also buses stops right outside our doors
