Charlotte is a city in North Carolina, United States. It was founded by colonists in 1784 as a small town on the Yadkin River. The first permanent habitation was erected on what is now Tryon Street near where present-day Union Park stands today. At that time there were only three families living here: those from England, Scotsmen and Germans. English Captain John Lederer granted land to these pioneers for their settlement which they named New Bern after his home town of Bernersville, Maryland (now part of Greensboro). These early residents built simple log homes which served as their homes until more powerful forces arrived and changed much of this region's cultural landscape. The arrival of railways brought new development to the area; gristmills were established along Yadkin River for processing wheat husks into flour, feeding soldiers during America's War for Independence (1812-1814) and other needs during that time period; sawmills became active producing slabs/blocks/blocks (sawn lumber) for furniture, doors etc., posts, fencing etc.; wagon trains laden with goods traveled downriver each day from points such as Durham through Waxhaw and Elizabethtown before reaching route 7 outbound at Piedmont Ferry Landing which took them upriver to Wilmington taking them all the way to Raleigh via Catawba Falls Bridge across Harnett Creek on July 15, 1814! Here they unloaded at British Naval Base Portsmouth then continued onward by boat or rail back upriver to Raleigh! Today’s Tryon Street cuts through downtown’s heart while parkland comprising Tryon Square & much of today’s Midtown contains some remnants dating back over 200 years ago In quick succession another key industry emerged: manufacturing began with clothiers making drapes and bedding; soap production followed soon afterwards; cotton ginners produced ginned cottonseed oil for light candles until around 1800 before waxing their equipment spinning raw cotton into fabric Additionally farming played an important role throughout these earliest days with crops such as corn ground into meal or used medicinally as relief from fever or diarrhea among others . There are numerous historical marker sites located throughout downtown including: Tryon Square where many prominent figures lived & worked including James Kountz Sr., founder (& first Mayor), Isaac Brockway “Ike” Lee (Governor 1907-1909), Drayton McLane (Senator 1913-1917), Horace Mann ( Congressman 1865-1875), Revolutionsman Parley Pugh ( Governor 1896-1900) In addition several blocks surrounding central business district still retain many buildings from prewar times including African American businesses such as Clarence Goode & Sons grocery store c1900 – 1915 brick building still standing & intact on corner lot next door former Fidelity Loan Company also built c1900 – 1915 . Also remaining are several other black owned businessesadrapsmithy [Chamberlain] Jewelry Co 1906 - 1912 – locally made glassware [Goudreau] Gourmet Bazaar 1905 - 1909 originally occupied two storefront locations facing Market Street but moved westward when local market monopoly declined [Krutch] Pharmacy 1901 - 1903 formerly occupied four storefront locations on MainStreet near UniversityOfNorth Carolina campus now Baptist Health SouthPark hospital floorplan 1902 single story frame house shared by female students attending UNC School Of Veterinary Medicine & Research animal husbandry lab 1923 razed following damage done by Hurricane Florence later that year Overall downtown celebrates its rich history thru various eventsceeding annual reinterpretations/updates initiated by Downtown Management Committee[DMC] since 2002
In 1736, the area now known as Charlotte was a part of West Africa. African slaves were brought over to North Carolina in small groups and began working on plantations in what is now eastern Charlotte County. In 1814, the first white person to live in what is now Charlotte was John Whitehead. The city was founded on July 4, 1835 by General Alexander Macomb, who named it after his sister-in-law, Queen Victoria of Great Britain.
