On November 15, 1829[3], General Smith's new capital was dedicated by then-Governor John Randolph with a public dinner at Randolph's plantation house called "The Mansion" later renamed "State House" after Lord Carrington donated land for it on December 4th.[4][5] On November 25th 1850[6], Union forces under Maj.-Gen Jesse Matthews destroyed Confederate Fort Brown along Tyndall Beach Rd., located about 8 miles SWBTN of today's uptowns Research Triangle Park - becoming one of several major Confederate defeats during the American Civil War that helped spur Reconstruction efforts throughout much of southern United States; this event took place just outside what is now Gastonia/Winston-Salem NC & surrounding counties
