In 1860, when Confederate forces sacked Fort Sumter during the Civil War,[2] much excitement prevailed throughout North Carolina over news of this event because it demonstrated how well our stately former slave system had held up against repeated attacks by abolitionists and Northern troops alike. As a result of this public display of support for Confederate statesmanship, local businesses decided that they would start using different names for their products reflecting this newfound Southern patriotism: “Confederate” became “Northern”; “Southerner” became “Unionist”; etcetera. These changes were soon followed by others such as Tobacco Road becoming Union Row before finally settled on City Hall Square where today we stand.[3] Although many people consider downtown Charlotte home turf since its incorporation into city limits more than 50 years ago, there are numerous neighborhoods within or adjacent to downtown that maintain strong cultural ties with theirrespective hometowns even long after leaving Charlotte behind for professional or other reasons[4]. Charlotte, North Carolina is a city in the United States. It was founded in 1755 by Samuel Johnston and James Montague as an English Settlement on the Waccamaw River. The city was renamed for Charlotte Amalie of German descent in 1848. In 1927, Charlotte became one of 102 municipalities in the State of North Carolina, part of the newly formed Carolina Peninsula region. The metropolitan area that includes Charlotte has a population of 2,687,527 as of 2018. The first permanent European settlement in present-day Charlotte was made by Captains James Montague and Samuel Johnston on July 26, 1755 when they arrived from England with 25 men to establish a trading post on the Waccamaw River. They named their new town after Queen Charlotte of Denmark who had recently become queen following her husband's death at the hands of French forces during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763). At first, trade centered around salt procurement from Indian tribes living along the river and Export Processing Zone activities such as timber gathering and rice packing were also conducted at this early stage. In 1803, Colonel John Cushing erected Fort Tryon which served as a military post commanding Lower Camden Creek between what is now Interstate 95 and Gastown before it was surrendered to British forces September 10th, 1804 under arrangements made by President Thomas Jefferson with Lieutenant Governor Alexander Macomb. After American independence was gained from Great Britain on November 8th, 1800, General Nathanael Greene ordered Colonel John Cushing to remove all British troops garrisoning Fort Tryon except for about 50 privates who he allowed to remain for security purposes until removed by order of General Washington on December 15th 1800 days later In 1824 Isaac Asbury founded what would become known as Baptist Church at Second and Gwin Streets while serving as pastor at First Presbyterian Church across Third Street from what is now City Hall As time passed more businesses started up downtown including breweries (Foley's Brewery1825-29; Pemberton Brewery 1830-35;etc.), but it wasn't until 1840 when brick began being used instead of natural wood for construction due to its superiority in fire resistance On October 12th 1860 Confederate Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Union soldiers under the command of Major General Edmund Kirby Smith near Jackson Square injuring 13 soldiers before being killed himself This attack caused great public outcry within America leading to increased security measures throughout eastern Tennessee including surrounding Greenwood County . On April 14th 1861 Confederate Brigadier General Braxton Bragg entered into battle against Union MajorGeneral Jubal Early near Wilmingtonport resulting in 16 casualties with only two dead brigadiers Browning captured alive During these clashes 4 civilian buildings were burned down including Bristol Hotel which resulted in $10 000 damages suffered by local business owners prior to Federal troops withdrawal less than 24 hours later
