The site for which Charlotte stands today was first settled by Native Americans about 12,000 years ago and was known as Yuchi Hitto (Place where Men Died). Today’s downtown area was founded in 1755 by General James Moore when he built Fort Macon on what is now Front Street near what is now Government House Square. The town sprang up quickly around this military installation and soon became known as “the Athens of North Carolina” because so many prominent North Carolina natives lived there including Thomas Jefferson and Nathanael Greene; both future signers of the Declaration of Independence! In 1814, when General George Bancroft visited Yuchi Hitto to study its natural resources for possible colonization in South Carolina – he recommended that NC grow rice instead! A few years later – Mayor James Smith started plans to build what would become One block from City Hall on Meeting Place now home to Thompson Center Mall! And this began what would be called “The Movement to Save DowntownCharlotte”; spearheaded by neighborhoods like Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity & PNC Arena who banded together to fight for permanent zoning changes allowing for more office space along with public transportation options within walking distance! With perseverance & hard work over many years – we have seen some amazing progress made: In 2006 – downtownCharlotte received a major makeover courtesy of professional team design firm Foster + Partners who created an innovative mixed-use development called BRAND New Urbanism which landmarked nearly everysightline within our boundaries! This project included new streetscape features such as a skybridge/skywalk over Catawba River & river walk extending all the way down riverbank providing ample opportunities for open air programming & dining atop restored Victorian buildings creating an inviting environment unlike any other in town! Additionally – new restaurants (including Lark Rise Taqueria), bars (such as Distracted Boyfriendz), live music venues (including Regal Ballroom), arts organizations (including Recca) …., etc.) helped createa vibrant atmosphere unique unto itself magnets for pedestrians & shoppers alike eager to explore everything Ommegang Brewery had to offer ! And even though it took several more years before all elements came together resulting in GRAND OPENING OF THE brand new $100 million BRAND NEW URBAN CENTER ON MAIN STREET back in January 2017; it couldn’t have been done without all those hard working neighbors who joined forces over time

Charlotte, North Carolina is a city in the southeastern United States and the county seat of Mecklenburg County. The population was 793,813 as of July 1, 2018. It is the largest city in bothMecklenburg County and its surrounding Pender County. The first settled area in what is now Charlotte was on Tryon Street near what is now First Street. On January 6, 1775, General James Oglethorpe moved his headquarters from Savannah, Georgia to Charlotte after Orange County was split off from Mecklenburg County. The new county courthouse was built on South Tryon Street and became the administrative center for the new county. In 1827–28, commissioners built an addition to the courthouse which served as their town hall until it burned down in 1892. In 1839, Thomas Cooper surveyed a southern extension of Raleigh into Mecklenburg Counties under the assumption that Raleigh would become part of a proposed central government formed by Unionists during the American Civil War; this never happened and when Mecklenburg County joined North Carolina in 1847 it remained part of Durham County solely because Durham had larger financial resources than Mecklenburg County at that time. On October 12, 1861 mass meetings were held throughout Northern Carolina to consider secession fromthe United States due tothe Confederate attack on Fort Sumter; voting took place at various locations including Charlotte but no resolution reached a majority because most delegates were from northumberland counties which did not secede until 1865 when they did so jointly with Johnston's forces (and some eastern NC counties). Many people who lived south of Interstate 95 or east of US Highway 509 voted against secession because they believed that such action would mean forfeiture of their social privileges within their home state[citation needed]. However others living north and west of I-95 or US Highway 264 voted for secession based on economic reasons such as high taxes levied by centralized governments south of I-95 while those east of I-95 enjoyed more equal representation under northern governors[citation needed]. Aftermath: After Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter on April 12,[5] every Southern state except Virginia federated with Confederate States Of America forming what later becomes known as The Confederacy When North Carolina seceded from the U S., all black citizens living within its borders were required to leave regardless if they owned property within North Carolina or not – this included many who resided withinCharlotte proper where white citizens still managed municipal services including water mains and schools despite black residents being expelled without notice or compensation just weeks prior While these events occurred outside Charlotte’s boundaries there was significant violence and chaos resident inside city limits caused by now expelling black inhabitants along with disruption to already tumultuous community dynamics [6][7][8][9] In November 1861 “A Call To Arms” appeared in several newspapers urging white men across NC to arm themselves against potential slave revolts should Confederate forces regain control over portionsof East Tennessee/Western Georgia following Battle Of Stones River[10] Slaveholders responded largely through arms purchases rather than any concerted effort since they knew that any armed resistance would result in systematic destruction & enslavementof their slaves also resulting in considerable economic losses As tensions mounted between local militia groups loyalist authorities deployed troops consisting mainlyof Eastern NC cavalryman fresh off serviceFIFTEENMONTHSWITHOUT BREAKBALANCEIN NORTHERN CAROLINA BEING ALLOWED TO FIGHTFOR THE KNOXVILLE REGIMENT UNTIL JUNE 14! This sudden influx OF Militias WHICH MANAGED TO PREVAIL OVER THE LOOSE AND DESPATCHY MILITIANS IN CHARLOTTE DURING THIS TIME ALSO RAISES MUCH FEAR AND SUSpicion AMONGST CIVIL RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS RESPECTIVE TO NEW ENGLAND THAT MAY SOON ADMIT THEIR PART IN THE ACTUAL CONFLICT BETWEEN NORTHERN NATIONALS AND THE CONVENTIONAL ARMY! THIS SCENE RECOGNIZED AS AN INCIDENT OF COERCION AGAINST BLACK CITIZENS BY OFFICIALS WITNESSING INTERESTING DISORDER ON SATURDAY APRIL 22ND1862) Prior To 1862 normal law enforcement activities took place via constables employed by respective municipalities retained primarilyfor public security purposes Additionally personal arrest & detention Bethlehem jail facility housed approximately sixty African Americans awaiting trial or punishment however charges generally only resultedin transportation back homerather then confinement&imprisonment Angelina Female Jailer Arrested & Sentenced For Disrupting Peaceful Protestations Against Slavery At Her Workplace AUGUST 25th 1862) Within days following Charlotte’s incorporation as a city ordinance December 15th 1861 Wilkesboro Courthouse Annexation had formally designated all land westOf Main St./southWingate Ave../north Wingate Ave./east SideMcMahon Rd./west SideGreensboro Rd./east SideNew Hope Baptist Church annexation date unknown occupants include free blacks freedmen & mulattoes born free& colored people bornslave census takers enumerated 311 free blacks 145 mulattoes total 122 males 38 females
