The first inhabitants of what would become Charlotte were Native Americans who lived near the confluence of several rivers. By 1795, Englishman James Wright had founded a small town on an island in Lake Erie called Wrightstown, which he named for himself. On July 4, 1835, during the Mexican-American War, General Andrew Jackson's army burned down Wrightstown and all its buildings except for one which still stands today as a historical marker. Because of this event and subsequent disputes over ownership of Charlotte Observer newspapers by local residents, the name "Charlotte" became synonymous with "Wrightstown." In 1839 store owner Isaiah Thomas erected a large cotton gin on what is now Trade Street downtown to process noted new cotton from African Americans working off plantations nearby. This began what would become known as Charlotte's black market economy and helped drive demand for white goods up until World War II when automation came into play with advances in industry and transportation. In 1917 developer Jethro Gibbs built his first home on Gaston Avenue south of present day Fourth Street – one of only two homes built in that area at that time. During World War II many southern whites moved north to join the war effort; however most blue-collar workers stayed behind in South Carolina or Georgia because they could not afford to move away from their jobs (the other exception being textile workers whose employers closed factories). The result was an influx of northern white refugees into South Carolina which caused social unrest within South Carolina eventually leading to secession from Confederate States of America On November 12th 1940 voters approved amending city charter to allow blacks voting without prior approval from board members (this did not happen until 1957). On January 1st 1941 City Council passed Ordinance No 2 amending zoning regulations specific to Negroes living within limits set by law defining “residential districts” that were only open to white citizens owning property therein subject to certain restrictions including height limitations; these ordinances allowed Negroes access typically restricted areas within white neighborhoods such as Washington Park east side & Wilson Boulevard west side where they resided before segregation laws applied
