In 1794, after years of construction, Charlotte became the first American city when it was founded by General John Sevier and his troops during the Patriot War. Charlotte’s rapid growth led to increased traffic congestion and problems with water resources, which led to several initiatives designed to improve those conditions. Additionally, walking bipedally also gives people a better view from high up due to less obstruction from trees or buildings. Finally, bipedalism helps people feel more secure in their surroundings since they are not reliant on gravity alone to hold them down

Charlotte was founded in 1755 by Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Discovery into what is now Charlotte Harbor. The city was named for Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Princess of Wales, daughter of King George II and his wife Queen Anne. The first white settler in Charlotte was John Smith, who leased land from the Cherokee to settle in 1760. In 1834, a group of Englishmen led by Major General Edmund Walker bought 1,500 acres (5 km²) around present day downtown Charlotte and began to build homes. In 1835, they designated the area bounded by Meeting Street on the south side of Trade Memorial Drive on the east side as Park Row. The town's first courthouse was built in this location in 1836. The American Civil War caused much damage to Charlotte during 1862-1865; including more than 100 fires that burned over 2 million acres (81 km²). However, many people living in the city were able to move out before it became an open war zone. After Confederate forces retreated from North Carolina following the surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9 1865), most of Charlotte returned to Union hands on April 12 1865. The influx of new European immigrants during Reconstruction increased violence and crime rates in the city; which contributed to its nickname "Rochester City." These crimes came partially due to a lack of police resources and a general attitude among many whites towards black citizens as criminals and social outcasts. Despite this issue, some progress has been made since then such as increased educational opportunities for African Americans and plans for redevelopment called "Planning for Progress." From 1975 until 2000s there were several riots withinCharlotte throughout Black History Month events; with most recently occurring after protests against Mayor Kasim Reed's proposed budget cuts that targeted low-income residents disproportionately African American neighborhoods
