The history of holsters in Chapel Hill, North Carolina can be traced back to 1876, when two local gunsmiths, J.B. Wesson and P.H. Armstrong, designed and marketed a holster that allowed the use of handguns with their personal pistols. The first Holster Corporation was founded in Chapel Hill in 1880 by Wesson and Armstrong under the name "Fenix-Armstrong." In 1892, Wesson merged with Peak Forge Armory to form the Fenix-Peak Forge Armory Holsters company. The company became known for its quality products and for producing holsters for a wide variety of firearms including revolvers, rifles, shotguns, pistols and submachine guns. In 1916, Fenix-Peak Forge Armory merged with American Arms Company to become American Arms & Holsters Incorporated (A&H). A&H continued to produce high-quality holster products until it closed in 1949. Today there are several different companies that produce holster brands such as Hogue®, Glock®, Smith & Wesson® and Beretta®Holster manufacturers throughout the United States. Additionally some holster manufacturers have licensed production rights from other firearm manufactures such as Colt ® or Springfield Armory ® .

In 1825, Governor John Burcham designated Chapel Hill a town with a charter dated November 10th that made it one of eight original towns formed within new Wake County during Johnston's term as governor following his inauguration on January 7th, 1824 . On July 1st 1860, during Confederate skirmishes at Defiance Gap near Hawkesboro Road between Union troops commanded by Brigadier General Garnett Woodson (the future Ulysses S Grant) and Confederate forces commanded by Colonel William Treadwell (future George Washington Carver), Lieutenant Richard Hoggarty opened fire from within Fort Tryon upon retreating Confederate soldiers—a single shot that killed all thirteen men inside Fort Tryon . This event marks the first time battlefront gunfire had been fired within municipal limits in North Carolina since before statehood <>. In 1865–1866 Rufus King purchased land east of Park Avenue where he built Kingsmill Dam across Watauga River so that flooding could be prevented during wet seasons. His mill operated until 1908 when it was destroyed by a flood caused by heavy rains followed by a severe drought that year. King's mill continued to generate power for many years afterwards until 1955 when electricity became available from Duke Energy During World War II more than 20% of all manufactured goods produced in North Carolina came from Chapel Hill. More than 4500 students attended UNC-Chapel Hill between 1939 and 1945; nearly half full time faculty. Many famous alumni have gone on to complete great careers such as Bill Gates ( Computer Pioneer), Warren Buffett ( Investor/Businessman), Barack Obama ( President/Senator), Tiger Woods ( Professional golfer). In 2006–2007 there were record lows for housing prices (−$2 million per house)
