Gun target shooting has been an important part of the history of Chapel Hill, North Carolina for many years. The first gun target shoot in ChapelHill was on October 9th, 1892. This event was organized by Colonel H. G. Armstrong and it was at his home on Hillsborough Street. Gun target shooting grew gradually throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s in Chapel Hill, due to the popularity of handguns as a source of recreation. The first real-life handgun targets were brought to Chapel Hill by Captain John Witherspoon in 1907. Captain Witherspoon had a custom built rifle that he used to shoot pistols at long range targets across North Carolina and Virginia. He introduced handguns to the area through this type of shooting activity and it quickly became popular among residents in ChapelHill and surrounding areas. The popularity of handgun targets led to the development of other types of targets as well, such as rifle targets and shotgun targets. Rifle Target Shooters Association (RTSA) is now one of the longest standing organizations within NRA with over 100 chapters nationwide! Shotgun Target Shooting Association (STSA) is also prominent within NRA with over 30 chapters statewide! Shotgun shooters commonly use shotguns for their target practice instead of handguns because shotguns are much more powerful than handguns when shot from close range

The first courthouse in what is now Chapel Hill was built in 1802 by Judge John Hance and served as the judicial center for the entire county until 1827 when it was moved to Raleigh. During World War II, much effort went into creating a munitions plant at nearby Durham which helped produce more than two million shells for the war effort. After the war, Durham became an important commercial and industrial center with numerous companies such as Sam Adams Brewery being established within its boundaries. Purdue Pharma began operations in Durham in 1919 with hopes of becoming America's largest pharmaceutical company. In 1953, UNC Chapel Hill formed a partnership with Purdue Pharma to develop new drugs for use by patients with addiction To this day, UNC Chapel hill remains one of America's most active research institutions when it comes to researching addiction medications In 2009, chapel hill became home to the world’s largest student-led orchestra when Duke University’s Menlo Park Symphony Orchestra merged with local high school bands from across North Carolina ChapelHill has been host city for several international events including both JazzFestivals (2007) & Cinque Terre (2012). It will also become home again during this year's edition thereof organized under "Universities United" program
Chapel Hill is the largest city in North Carolina and the seventh-largest in America. It is also known for its medical school, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and its film industry.
