The area now known as Chapel Hill was designated as part of East Tennessee Colony by Royal Charter dated March 3rd 1771[2]. In 1801 King James Kenedy granted an act for erecting a College at Charlotte which became known as Davidson College[3]. On November 16th 1819 David Brown donated land east of town for use as a seminary[4] which he had purchased from Dr William Mecklenburg.[5] On February 26th 1830 Rev George White organized UNC Charlotte students into what became known as "The Alumni Association"[6], transforming it into an educational institution bearing his name that still exists today. The first president of Davidson College was Rev Wm Hogg [7][8]. On October 14th 1833 Reverend Elijah Broughton organized UNC Chapel Hill students into what became known as "The Aggies".[9][10] At this time Uniontown (later renamed Alamance) was within the boundaries of Raleigh but due to boundary changes it came under Chapel Hill jurisdiction on January 1st 1834[11][12][13]. By 1840 Alamance County had become fully annexation territory of Raleigh[14][15], with Orange County following suit on February 1st 1841[16] On April 20th 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Wilmington while retreating from Chancellorsville Campaign,[17] resulting in more than 140 killed and over 500 wounded including many women and children who were captured or taken prisoner along with their menfolk In 1870 Presbyterian Bishop Edward Hyde created Divinity School at UNC Asheville which would become internationally renowned after admitting women ordained thereto in 1918 In 1925 Baptist Apostle FloydJones founded Hope Christian Fellowship Church whose worship services began serving downtown Chapel Hills on High Street

In 1924 twoand-a-half years after being founded, UNC Chapel Hill awarded its first undergraduate degree – Bachelor's degrees were not offered until 1945. By 1930–31 enrollment had reached 10,000 students and by 1954 it had grown to 20,000 students undergraduate and graduate programs. During World War II many local businesses took part in production or supply shortages resulting from military rationing; these companies are often remembered through names such as Peanut Corporation or Textron Inc.. More recent growth has come from industries such as health care services and technology research which have drawn workers away from Charlotte over time. The current skyline view looking east towards Durham across Rocky Mount Lake shows some changes that have taken place since then: a large IMAX theater opened there in 2006 which replaced an old movie house; a new light rail system called light rail Transit systems started service between Durham/ChapelHill Airport and downtown Durham on February 22nd 2009; a large shopping mall called Elizabethtown Center built on more than 2 million square feet (190 m2) adjacent to Trinity Baptist Church near Interstate 85 made possible through private investment by NC Central Railroad Company
