Many people consider that this merger created more competition between schools within Durham County than any other single event throughout American higher education history because it did not merging two smaller schools into one larger institution but rather creating two entirely new institutions – Duke University and UNC-CHAPEL HILL – each with their own identity and resources which made them difficult to integrated into each other’s cultures even after many years of growth and development. In 1865, a British inventor named John Brown invented the Browning rifle that utilized a choke tube to control fire in flights of birds. Chokes became popularized after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012, where 14 children and six adults were killed by a gunman using a chokehold on one of the victims. The tragedy led to renewed interest in choke holds and their history.

In 1870–71 new streets were laid out through downtown Johnston Square with buildings being built primarily for commercial purposes such as stores and hotels; however Presbyterian minister Simeon Bayles preached an evening sermon from his home on Market Square which began a trend of weekly sermons beginning in 1871 that would continue until his death in 1925 at age 79 years old. In 1905 Reuben Foster (later NFL linebacker for Carolina Panthers) graduated from UNC-ChapelHill with his Bachelors degree in Business Administration; he then went on to found Foster Broadcasting Corporation which remains one of the nation's largest radio networks today with over 20 million listeners across 140 countries worldwide
