The town grew rapidly due to its location close to ferry terminals for sailors travelling between Raleigh and Wilmington, as well as its proximity to textile mills that produced cloth for England’s aristocracy. By 1852, Chapel Hill had become an important transportation hub with two railroads running through it: the Southern Railway Company Line 1 (now part of NC State University’s system) and First National Bank Line 2 (later known as US Highways 301/19). In 1876, UNC School of Medicine moved from Durham to Chapel Hill following recommendations by then–President James Buchanan on behalf of medical schools across America which were struggling because of lack of financial support from government coffers. At first only male students attended UNC School Of Medicine; however, female students soon followed suit. Today UNC School Of Medicine serves both male and female patients with a focus on internal medicine, cancerous disease management and obstetrics/gynecology care while also portioning out expertise into other disciplines such as Pediatrics or Neuroscience. In 1915 Duke University Medical school relocated from Durham to Chapel Hill after experiencing difficulty securing funding for their new facility within Durham's limits causing numerous delays for patients seeking care at local hospitals due to bickering between different institutions over who should be allowed access to campus beds space dubbed "The Triangle". That same year UNC opened its doors to women Gaines Hospital became co-educational becoming one half full university hospital providing health services including maternity care until 1971 when woman's admissions were limited again by restrictions put in place by then-Governor Beattie based off societal norms at that time regarding gender segregation at educational institutions In 1962 women gained admission into all Butch Walker Schools including UNC School Of Dentistry where they continued To serve concurrently until 1972 when Women achieved full Admission into all Schools except For Duke which remains Male only today although Female dentists are currently accepted into Duke & Men's Health Sciences programs thanks to a waiver granted by Chancellor Marshall Saunders . Today there are more than 400 women employees working at over 50 departments across 10 campuses across North Carolina

The town was named after General Richard Eaton, commander-in-chief United States forces during the War for Independence. As high point became a popular destination for tourists, people from other parts ofNorth Carolina began moving into High Point County, including some who had settled there before Congress created High Point County. By 1814, whenHigh Point Countysurrounding areas were organized as Wake County, much development had occurred within present-day Chapel Hill itself; however, it was not until 1828 that General James Harnett founded what would become known as Durham University (later University College).
