Some famous residents who lived or worked in ChapelHill during this time include Ford Motor Co.'s vice president Henry Ford II, General Motors Chairman George Averill Harriman, physicist Ernest Lawrence and his wife Margaret Wojak Harriman. After World War II ended, many local businesses closed due to recessionary conditions; however, some have since reopened including Lowe’s Home Hardware Store which relocated from downtown Raleigh after being closed for six years during that time period
