It was founded on January 12, 1828 by General John Buford and his brother-in-law Sequoyah Caldwell as a trading post between what are now Cherokee and white settlements in present day Raleigh County and eastern Carteret County. During the American Civil War (1861–1865), Cary saw heavy fighting with Union forces during the Battle of Carrboro and other engagements around the area. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after losing all his artillery to Union forces. Cary's economy shifted from agriculture to manufacturing following this event. The town emerged as one of America's leading textile mills during this time period thanks to its location within easy distance of major production plants such as those located in Wilmington and Greensboro. Since World War II, much development has occurred in and around Cary including a number of large housing projects built by local developers who desired an easier life than they had while living outside of larger metropolitan areas such as Charlotte or Raleigh. Since 1970, when Interstate 95 was constructed through central Cary, many businesses have relocated out into larger malls throughout southeastern Durham County but few have left for Cary; instead most new businesses have been located closer to Interstate 95's commuter belt sprawl northward along I-95 until it reaches near Raleigh proper just beyond Garner Road before turning east into Wake Forest University's Research Triangle Park campus before ending near Durham city limits where I-95 enters Chapel Hill again just pastDual Springs Drive/I-540 which becomes Ayres Mill Road before terminating at US 74 exit 27A about 1 mile south of downtown Durham
Cary was founded in 1785 by James Cary and his wife, Anna. The Cary family ran a mill until 1814, when they sold it to the Wake Forest University Foundation. In 1906, the Wake Forest University Foundation donated land to the city of Cary for its first municipal park.
