Cary, North Carolina is a small town in the state of North Carolina. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. Cary is located on the east bank of the Yadkin River and it is bordered to the north by Raleigh and to the south by Durham. Cary has a humid subtropical climate with significant annual rainfall. The town was founded in 1853 by Scotsmen who settled in what is now eastern Cary County. In 1871, when Raleigh became an independent city, Cary merged with its neighbor Durham to form one large city. Today, Cary retains close ties with its Scottish origins as well as its northern neighbors; both cities are home to many high-profile businesses and cultural attractions. The first settler in what is now eastern Cary County was David Livingstone, who arrived in 1796 from Ayrshire, Scotland. Livingstone married Anna McIntosh and they started farming around 1798 near where modern day Gastonia stands today. Anna McIntosh's parents were also farmers and her father had come from Scotland two years earlier. By 1800 all of present-day eastern Cary County had been developed, including parts of what is now western Wake County which would become part of Durham later that year. In 1853 settlers move into what is now southeastern Wake County after hearing about rich farmland along the Yadkin River on their way west from London on their railroad trip across America (the Duke & Duchess Express). When they reached Carrboro they found it abandoned because there was no water available for crops or cattle so they set up homes among local huts made out of logs put together using traditional methods such as sawing and pounding nails into earthenware pots used for boiling water or brewing tea (see photo below). Afterward, it emerged as one of Tennessees fastest growing cities with more than 10 million residents by 2000; today it remains a major economic engine with strong concentrations of industry and government employment throughout its metropolitan area including much of central Davidson County which has been designated as a National Heritage Corridor site
Cary was founded in 1737 by John Cary and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the Cary family, which had settled there in 1698. The first store opened in 1738. By 1851, the population of Cary had grown to over 1,200 people. In 1865, the railroads arrived and began providing transportation within the region. This led to more development within the town and its surroundings. In 1970, Cary became a city-county seat.
