After Reconstruction ended, Raleigh took control of much of what had been left behind in Cary – including most importantly its economy – while new businesses built up around downtown and other neighborhoods across the city. Today, Cary is still thriving as an important cultural and commercial center with active nightlife, professional sports teams,and several high-end shopping centers.
