Cary's economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries. The first human settlers in what is now Cary were two families who came from Scotland in 1795. They named their new community after General James Caldwell (1747-1827), an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Continental Congress who had served as an aide to George Washington. The Caldwells established a small farm near present-day Cary village before moving their operation to a more permanent location in 1800. By 1824, when the Town of Cary was created by act of the North Carolina General Assembly, it consisted of just six houses and lay within present day eastern boundaries of Raleigh proper. During its early years, Cary was primarily agricultural with some Manufacturing activity taking place such as wagonmaking and tanning hides/ skins from hogs killed by farmers for fuel or shoes for their horses or buggies. However over time this base shifted towards Service industries due to rapid growth in Raleigh which then attracted entrepreneurs looking for opportunities in rapidly changing technology eras including: machine shops (including one operated by Edwin Morse & Company that manufactured telephones until 1923), electronics companies such as Motorola and Fairchild Industries, autos including Ford Motor Company’s first plant opened here (1928)and IBM’s first US campus opened here (1947). Today there are many businesses active within the city limits with significant research commercial activities engaged within Research Triangle Park primary among them; however most residents continue to rely heavily upon Service Sectors/Industries providing employment growth through increased wages/salaries along with access to quality education opportunities both locally and regionally while simultaneously enjoying life outside these confined urban areas Cary has seen much redevelopment over recent decades but certain aspects remain largely unchanged including its central business district consisting of several large buildings dating back to 1925 housing numerous retailers including Sam’s Club(now Macy’s) Sears Roebuck Gillmor Chevrolet(now Buick GMC), JCPenney(today Sears Holdings Corporation) Fresh Market Grocery Store Big Lots Drugstore chains aluminum extension stores Home Depot department store Lowes respectively bringing together more than 100 retailers making up downtown shopping districts that are home to nearly 2 million people during peak hours .
Cary was founded in 1759 by James Cary, a Scottishman. The town was named after Cary's father who died in 1754. The first store in the town was built on what is now known as Main Street. In 1847, the town became an incorporated municipality. In 1927, the town voted to become a city and it has since grown significantly with its population reaching over 50,000 today.
