Cary is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Pembroke River. The population was 27,814 at the 2010 census. In 1838, General William Maclennan granted 1,500 acres (50 ha) of land at what is now south side of Tryon Street to John Surry for £10 per acre (0.50 ha). This land became known as Surry's Valley after him because it supported a large amount of crops year round and supported a small number of people who lived thereabouts with their cattle and slaves until about 1880 when Surry sold his holdings to Andrew Johnson for $3 million dollars ($30 million today). Johnson donated much of this money to create Duke University which opened its doors on April 23, 1892–present day. The town site originally included only 2 blocks east of where present-day Tryon Street crosses Interstate 95; however development quickly extended westward along Tryon Street to include all or part of every major business district east or west of I-95 by 1950 including more than 50 high technology firms such as IBM, Dell Computer Corporation, Intel Corporation and Microsoft Windows NT System Center Services Co., Inc.). It should be noted that since there are no definitive records dating back earlier than 1800 documenting any Cherokee settlements within present day Cary or even nearby Dare County our understanding thereof may be limited by conjecture rather then fact Cary was chartered as a town on December 12th 1798 under special act passed by General Assembly’s 30th Session Laws Of North Carolina No#617 A bill providing for Townsite Planning Commission And boundaries Of Townships In said county For future Improvement/Rural Development purposes From page 185 thru page 188 Text On Page 188 Line 7 “And he did cause Also That portion Which lies between East Side Road And White Oak Creek thence To Where It joineth With Deep Creek thence To His Highness” So far we have been able to identify 2 portions lying between East Side Road And White Oak Creek - these portions would likely continue down Deep Creek Rd following NC Hwy 95 until reaching His Highness' lands
