Carrboro is a town located in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 12,725 at the 2010 census. Carrboro is part of the Durham–Chatham Metropolitan Area. In 1794, when Englishman Sir George Carteret and his brother-in-law Colonel James Dobson landed in what is now Carrboro on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, they named it for their friend and native of Portsmouth, England John Carr. At first the little settlement consisted of only a few dozen people living aboard small vessels that sailed from Wilmington to supply those ashore with goods or passengers during the then newly invented seaship trade. The first permanent settler in what is now Carrboro was Myles Coffin who came overland from Albemarle County in 1814. He laid out a grant called "MountHope" which included all present day Carrboro except portions of Chapel Hill and Raleigh to form what would become known as the City of Chapel Hill. Mr. Coffin's heirs sold much property including Mount Hope to Jameson & Johnston who laid out streets and built houses here beginning about 1825 when they became proprietors of the area which today includes most of downtown Carrboro and parts of Chapel Hill and Raleigh Proper. In 1831 Samuel Freeman purchased some land east of present day University Avenue from Jameson & Johnston for $200 per acre; this became known as Freeman's Row (later renamed University Heights). Soon after Freeman erected a two story brick building on his lot which served as an inn until 1870 when he moved into his own house on High Street which still stands today – originally designed by JW Marriott (founder/president/ceo hotel Marriott Corporation) himself as one block long and wide with five stories! From 1850 until 1865 there was also another early settler in this area – Hiram Bicknell who arrived via boat from Georgia via Wilmington docks oppositepresentday Duke University Ferry Landing! From 1850 until 1860 Bicknell operated three boats each day carrying goods upriver to Crabtree’s Mills where he stored them before bringing them down again each night for shipment back downstream! Today you can see remnants Of these boats just outside present day Wrightsville Ferry Landing off US 74 near mile marker 131! Bicknell's Ferry landing became an important transportation link between east Durham County (then Wakefield Township) and western Chatham County because it allowed passengers ashore at Wrightsville Ferry Landing on their way north to Fuquay Varina plantations or points beyond while waiting for passage either upstream or downstream on various smaller boats running backandforth daily across Burrard Inlet! Over time other ferry terminals were built but none compare to Wrightsville Ferry Landing - becomingnc LARGELY THE ONLY MULTI-FAMILY PLACE OF ITS KIND IN NORTH CAROLINA TO OPERATE A FERRY TO AND FROM THE OCEAN!!! It was at this place that Titanic finally dockaged after its maiden voyage from Southampton Harbor around Cape Hatterasasket tripnewsome 15 nautical miles off shore late April 1912!!!! The following morning we heard reports that “the Lusitania” had sunk!! All hands went onto deck immediately…. There were no survivors!!!! Our hearts go out unto all who lost shipmates onboard !!!!!

The town's growth continued until the Civil War when it declined to slavery because its residents were free people of color. early cotton plantations were located along the coastlines of North Carolina and Georgia; however, by 1865, most production had ceased due to technological changes and racial unrest in those areas caused by freedmen seeking work on new plantations. By 1870, over 20% of all taxable value in Carroll County was produced within one mile of any slave market or trade center. During Reconstruction following the Civil War, many white men from southcentral America moved into eastern North Carolina to seek wealth and opportunity during Reconstruction era government jobs and political power struggles that followed reconstruction efforts throughout much of America. The largest concentration occurred around Carrboro where many white men came looking for work on newly acquired southern cotton plantations while black men were used as slaves on these same plantations after they were freed from slavery. African Americans began voting en masse beginning with local elections in 1868 which helped WHITE Republicans gain control over state government across much of eastern North Carolina during Reconstruction periods including Carrboro where they kept many government positions including sheriff, justice court judge and Congressman from 1886 until 1893 when Democrat James Byrnes unseated Republican incumbent Robert Pritchard with help from African American voters who wanted more civil rights opportunities for African Americans living throughout eastern North Carolina during this time period as well as other parts of America During some points such as at Waco Texas during Free Black Movement there may have been up to 100% black voter turnout even though all citizens are considered participation regardless race
Carrboro was the original town in North Carolina. It was chartered on July 12, 1735, and named for Admiral Christopher Carr. The first year of its existence, Carrboro had a population of only twenty-four people. By 1800, the population had grown to two hundred fifty-six people.
