Carrboro was founded by GeneralJoseph Epps as a small trading post on Catawba River in 1812. In 1840 it became an incorporated town under the name Pembertonborough. It was renamed Carrboro in 1908 after Commodore John Broughton Carr, who had served as American Naval attaché to Great Britain during World War II. The town of Carrboro is located along Interstate 95 and U.S Route 421 between High Point and Winston Salem; Interstate 55 bridges connect Carrboro with both cities. The Yadkin Valley Railroad bisects Carrboro east-west and north-south; Ulysses S Grant Boulevard connects Carrboro to Chapel Hill, North Carolina's largest city (and home to UNC) across the river from Carrboro. The town's first school was built on Meeting Street in 1814 by James Mclntyre; this building still stands today and serves as the Historical Museum of Carrington County Incorporated Schools District No 1 (HCDISD1). In 1847 Dr David Hargrave opened what would become known as Hargrave Bros Drug Store on Meeting Street which remains open today as well as providing educational opportunities for students throughout Carrington County through its outreach program called "David Hargrave Academy". In 1924 when HCDISD1 merged with nearby Hickory School District #2, then Hickory School District #5 became Carrington County's second school district; Hickory School District #4 closed in 1989 due to budget cuts within Carrington County government following that merger In 1960 when Strathmore Consolidated Schools District No 2 merged into Hickory School District #5, then Strathmore Consolidated Schools District No 3 became also part of Hickory School District No 5 following that merger In 1971 when AlamanceSchoolDistrictNo2 merges into Strathmore Consolidated SchoolsDistrictNo3 suceeding that merger Today there are 10 schools serving over 9500 students administered through 10 different districts including: HCDISD1- History Museum of Carrington County Incorporated Schools DISTRICT NO 1 (HCDISD1), HCSD2 - Hickory School District #2, STRATHMORE CONSOLIDATED SCHOOL SYSTEM NO 2 - Strathmore Consolidated Schools System No 3, ACSD2 - Alamance SchoolDistrict #2

It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1795 by Captains John and James Hance as a trading post on Catawba River east of what is now Carrboro, on land grants from Sir Walter Raleigh. The name means "place where many young deer are born." In 1814, General Andrew Jackson's army passed through Carrboro on their way to battle against Stonewall Jackson at Chancellorsville. Because so many soldiers were living there at the time, locals named the creek "Jackson's Creek" in honor of the general. In 1853-54, Burruss built his first cotton gin in what is now downtown Carrboro; it became known as Burruss' Mill after him. In 1875-76, Elisha Squires organized a local church and school system which would become one of Northern capitalism's earliest successes Carrboro became an independent municipality on December 14th 1886 when it ratified a petition by citizens seeking to do so following annexation by Burlington (then Henderson County) during that year's statewide referendum process. Its first mayor was Wm Denton Bacon who served for one term from 1888 to 1890 Bacon also served as native speaker (and later honorary president) of the group that created English as an official language within our community In 1931-32 Harold Ivey served as Carrboro's first African American Mayor Ivey increased public education opportunities for African Americans through his administration and implemented such programs as free lunch for all students in city schools and integrated buses throughout the city . By 1941 black men had made up over 50% of Carrboros workforce while white women held only 28%of office positions
Carrboro was founded on December 12, 1775, by Lieutenant Colonel John Sevier and Major James Johnston. The town became a major military installation during the American Revolution, and saw combat in both the French and Indian War and the American Civil War. In 1865, Carrboro became a part of the newly formed Carolina Department of State.
