The first white settler arrived in what is now Carrington Township on October 25th 1795 by way of Roanoke Rapids Ferry across James River into North Carolina under Captain John Smith - America's first European settlers arriving via water transport following their discovery of new land between Cape Fear Point on Elizabeth Island and Jamestown Cove near Burlington Shoals On November 5th they erected two logs cabin called White House which served them until they could build a better one approximately one year later - Nathaniel Bacon On January 1st 1796 two more families started arriveing by boat from Virginia under Captains John Cooksey & Thomas Ledyard only 3 days after Captain Cooksey left his last mission at Charlotte Harbor having failed to find any lands worth exploring further than Beaufort Inlet just off NC coast he’d discovered about 8 miles (13 km) wide open coastline with plenty of freshwater resources but no headland so he turned back disappointed finding nothing but Fords Head Light House about 15 miles (24 km) away at what is now known as Fort Fisher State Park offshore from Wilmington TVA operated by US Army during WWII renamed “Holly Hill” soon after surrendering due to enemy action
