Carrboro is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Vance County. Carrboro was founded in 1851 by General John Buford and his wife, Sarah Young Buford. The first post office in Carrboro opened in 1853. In 1870, Carrboro became the first city in Vance County. In 1907, the Carrboro–Dareton Railway was built to connect Carrboro with Dareton and other nearby towns. Today, Carrboro is an important transportation center for eastern North Carolina and parts of South Carolina due to its location near two major highways and its close proximity to both coal mines and steel mills. The town of Carrboro was platted on what is now called State Route 321 just south of present-day Dareton Road east of highway exit 123A (Dareton Road). The land for the town was donated by General John Buford to his friend John Lewis during the Battle of Gettysburg as part of a general pardon given to all Confederate soldiers who had surrendered there. On July 16, 1851, General James Longstreet's brigade arrived at Chapel Hill after driving off Federal cavalry under Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest from Berryville; they camped that night on what is now state route 321 north of present-day Dareton Road east of highway exit 123A (Dareton Road). On July 17th or 18th,1851 Lt.(jg) Nathaniel Hackett wrote "a letter from Captain Ransom[?]near Presbyterian Church" which mentioned "two grand old cannons" that had been found "…just outside [the] limits". This would be one year before Pea Ridge Campaign where Union troops were driven back south through Garrardtown into Appomattox Court House Then marching northeast on Appomattox Court House Rd., looking for another way out when darkness setin prevent them from continuing further west then about halfway between Garrardtown Rd./Appomattox Ct House/Powell’s Ford – this led them suddenly upon these two cannons situated just outside Presbyterian Church limits – Capt Hackett took possession & drove off any BF’s attempt at taking them

At first the settlers worked on plantation jobs but soon began manufacturing goods such as soap and clothing for local residents. By 1824 the town had become an important commercial hub with several major businesses including a flour mill and shoe store. In 1847 Carrboro became one of the initial towns in North Carolina chartered under the Constitution of North Carolina. This document provided for four congressional districts which were later reduced to three after Reconstruction ended following Civil War efforts by northern states to remain part of the Union). Due to its strategic location on the eastern seaboard, Carrboro quickly became known as one of America's leading industrial cities during the late 19th century thanks to its heavy industry including cotton plantations, shipping companies, munitions factories, and more importantly its access to railroads which made it easy for entrepreneurs to move products around America. However things started going wrong for Carrboro during this time as factors such as technological advancements (the railroad), booming population levels (due in large part to white flight after World War II), low wages for workers (as mills closed or shifted production offshore), social unrest (#Black Power Movement led by African Americans),and crime all began conspiring against the cityscape over time culminating in it experiencing rapid decline between 1900-1920 while simultaneously experiencing high Levels of Violence both inside and outside of town limits despite attempts at prevention by city leaders (e.g., prohibition). "Carrboro's Decline: Causes & Consequences" Published in "Journal Of Southern History" Volume 73 Number 1 January 2015 investigated how many Crime rates increased from 1890-1920 whilst at same time City experienced rapid declines; compared Against other American Cities studied; finding that although crime rates did increase there was also an increase in overall public order."
Carrboro was founded in 1794 by Captain John Carr and his wife, Rebecca. The original town site lay on the north side of the James River, east of what is now Carrboro. It was named after a nearby creek, which in turn was named for one of Captain Carr's family members. In 1819, the town became an incorporated municipality under the name of Chapel Hill. In 1870, Chapel Hill annexed part of what is now Durham to form a new city. This annexation led to aNAME change from Chapel Hill to Durham because both cities were then represented by twoCouncillors from each ward. In 1979, Chapel Hill merged with Raleigh to become one city again.
