This area was home to the Cherokee Nation and its people used traditional means of warfare- such as bows and arrows- until they were forced out by white settlers in 1785. The land where Carrboro now stands was part of what is now Georgia before being acquired by North Carolina in 1814. In 1833, local citizens voted to incorporate as a city because they felt that it would be more beneficial if there were a central governing body for their community. During World War II, Carrboro became an important production center for ammunition due to its strategic location within easy reach of many factories producing military equipment. After the war ended in 1945, research began into growing alternative materials for artillery munitions such as uranium enriching pellets and plastic rounds instead of lead shot and powder.
