Burlington was first settled in 1775 by the Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived from County Clare. The town was named for Burlington, Ireland, where many of these settlers had relatives. The first store in Burlington opened in 1779. In 1802, a railroad was built through Burlington and it became an important transportation center. In 1868, the Burlington Railroad merged with the Carolina Central Railway to form the Charlotte & Durham Railway. The Burlington Railroad retired in 1984 and its tracks were decommissioned.
