The city government declined to annex adjacent towns until 1954 when they did so due to concerns about amalgamation with other municipalities within the Raleigh-Durham area. The first white child born in Burlington was Samuel Jenkins on December 12, 1796, who was one of five children born to John Jenkin and his wife Rebecca Hudgins Jenkins. From an early age, Burlingtonians were interested in learning about their surroundings and local history – John had been an avid reader since he was a young boy and frequently took his family out for walks through nearby woods where he would collect natural relics such as tree stumps and animal bones that he would exhibit at public displays throughout his life. In 1800, Burlington became the county seat of Caldwell County after it was created from parts of Orange and Wake Counties; however, this decision caused some tension because many residents felt that Caldwell should have been given more autonomy than it did at first. During much of this period there were also sporadic eruptions against what came TO BE KNOWN AS THE GREAT STORM OF 1907 which left extensive damage across portionsOf eastern North Carolina destroying homes, businesses AND PUBLIC SERVICES INCLUDING WATER SUPPLY SYSTEMS resulting in over 100 people dead+ dozens more injured+ millions Lost In Value FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES INCLUDING MANUFACTURERS!!! ALSO FILLED WITH SADNESS KNOWING THAT MUCH OF THIS STUFF DIDN’T EVEN DESTROYLY HIT THE CITY BUT WAS JUST ON A LARGER SCALE THAT LUCKILY NOTHING LIKE THAT EVER AGAIN!!???
