Burlington, North Carolina was once a small town on the banks of the Pee Dee River. The town was founded in 1827 by Captain John Burroughs and his family. Burlington grew rapidly during the years following its founding and soon became an important center for trade and commerce. In 1838, Burlington became the first city in North Carolina to be incorporated. The city's growth continued throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century; it reached its peak population size in 1950. After experiencing rapid declines in population over the course of the 21st century, Burlington has experienced a resurgence in recent decades and is now an thriving community with a rich history. The town of Burlington was initially settled by Irish immigrants who arrived in droves during the 1830s. Many of these men had previous experience working on farms or as laborers on plantations in Ireland. As early as 1827, Captain John Burroughs had decided that he would like to establish a permanent settlement in what is now Burlington. He purchased land along both sides of the river from Native Americans for £100 cash plus 10 acres of swamp land for future development. The purchase marked one of many successful ventures made byBurlington entrepreneurs during its early years. By 1830, there were already several small businesses operating within Burlington limits: blacksmithing businesses, wagon shops, a bakery, stores selling groceries, sailmakers and other maritime craftsmen, and a barber shop among others). By 1840, however, all but two of those businesses had either closed or been taken over by larger rivals; this left only two blacksmith shops remaining within downtown boundaries at that point. However, despite this dismal state of affairs momentarily prior to incorporation into cities status (which occurred on November 3rd that year), business quickly picked up again as locals eagerly awaited new opportunities created by incorporation which gave them greater power to make decisions about their own destiny Only four years later did another milestone occur: Burlington's first school opened its doors to students aged 6-18! This establishment was rather unique at that time due to its design – it featured an elevated classroom platform surmounted by a large dome which served as both classrooms and storage space for school materials/pupils’ textbooks/ tools etc.). Despite initial difficulties (with deficient funding sources accompanying every step towards opening such an innovative educational institution), within just five years schools across America had followed suit including some harboring similar designs – reflecting burgeoning popular demand at that time for more proximate public education options outside urban centers It wasn't until 1852 when Reverend James Faulkner took charge as School Superintendent & Headmaster at Stonington Female Academy which eventually led to Girls' High School being established adjacent to downtown Burrittown Center around 1860) That things began really going downhill for Burlington…literally! With increasing competition from neighboring townships (& even neighboring states!), taxes started becoming unbearable & residents turned increasingly against Mayor James Laughlin (& his fellow City Councilors) leading up to 1861 when they effectively shut down all public services including water supplies(ironically enough given their earlier complaints about lack thereof!). After monthslong street demonstrations & hours long sit-ins (+ various skirmishes between protesters & police officers ensued),Laughlin finally relented & allowed voting privileges back into municipal hands effective January 1st 1861 after promising not fire any more buildings without proper justification As previously mentionedBlount County annexation efforts were ongoing (& ultimately successful) at this time so much so that most people believe that if&when Blount County was admitted ontoNC’s official map it would have positioned Burlington right smack dab between NC’s southeastern border @ Roanoke Rapids (@ 25 miles wide) & Albemarle County (@ 30 miles wide)) making it difficult if not impossible for anyone living within our borders ever truly leaving us Referencing current day locations you can imagine just how different things might have been if reunification happened today 😉 While much has changed since then including increased competition from surrounding jurisdictions (most notably AlbemarleCounty), agricultural production continuesto thrive hereabouts contributing significantly To overall economic stability we enjoy today 😊
